I was bored thought I'd ask. Considering the World Cup starts in a month it's slightly topical too. Who would be in your greatest England XI? You can have 7 subs as well. ----------Seaman Neville Adams Campbell Pearce ----Ince Robson Scholes -----------Gazza -------Lineker Keegan Subs: Robinson, Terry, A.Cole, Gerrard, Beckham, Owen, Sheringham I tried to keep closer to my era, but it's hard when all of your time watching England has been full of overrated rubbish. As a result I've gone from late 70s onwards, using knowledge passed down from video footage and what the old man has said. Seaman vs Shilton - seen more of Seaman than Shilton, got a better idea of what he's like, even if he does cock up on the grand stage... Butcher vs Adams vs Terry - picked at random from the three. Pearce vs A.Cole - went for the one who seemed to epitomise England and had tons of passion. Psycho. Yes, there is no Shearer and yet there is Sheringham. Sue me.
I only go back to watching the finals in 1982 so would be players after that time. Shilton was close but would probably give Seaman the number 1 spot on his all round game. 1.Seaman.2.Parker.3.Pearce.4.Butcher.5.Walker.6.Robson.7.Platt.8.Gazza.9.Lineker.10.Beardsley.11 Waddle
These are all players i've seen and this is assuming perfect fitness and their top form. Seaman Neville Ferdinand King Cole Beckham Gerrard Scholes Gascoigne Rooney Shearer
I forgot Scholes but would stick with mine. Would take Pearce over Cole even if Cole probably is the better all round player simply because Pearce would walk through a wall for England just like somebody like Butcher who again wasn't great technically
Also there is no doubt Michael Owen ended his career badly but for a few years he was ****-hot, gets close to my team
As much as I'd like to consider Finney, Matthews, Greaves, Charlton, Moore, Banks etc, I'm only going to pick from 1978 onwards as that's the limit of my experience. -----------------Shilton ----Walker ----Wright---- Campbell Beckham--Robson--Scholes--Gascoigne--Cole ------------------Beardsley ------------------Shearer Part of my reasoning for the formation is the lack of a top-class right-back. If pushed for a specialist, I'd go for Gary Neville (I never rated Phil Neal). Shilton v Seaman is close. Butcher, Adams and Terry have all had their moments, as has Rio, but I prefer the balance of the three I chose: a runner/marker, a reader/footballer, and a beast/closet case. Robson is practically the first name on the team sheet - what an inspirational player! Shearer beats Lineker and Owen.
Robson was a beast of a player, this was back when football was a mans game with proper tackles, makes 99percent of current Premiership players look pathetic with their diving antics and so on
Aye, and nothing personal Macca. Just have a strong opinion that those two are not best XI. Doesn't mean I don't consider them to have been good larkers. Ashley Cole at his best above Pearce imo.
Seaman G.Neville Adams Terry A.Cole Gerrard Ince Scholes Rooney Shearer Owen I've only been watching England since Euro 96 and that reflects in my team.
Based on that: --------------------Shilton ------Neville Adams Walker Cole Becks Hoddle Scholes Gazza Barnes -------------------Shearer No room for Carlton Palmer by a whisker.
I have changed my mind over Adams already, swapped him for Butcher. Chose Psycho over Cole due to his passion and the fact he seemed to like he'd run through fire for the cause. That pen at Euro 96 is my fave ever England clip.
Completely off topic but a question to you. When do you want the Euro Millions Numbers? This will indicate how good your memory is!
Best I've seen; Seaman. Neville Walker Adams Cole Beckham Gazza Scholes Barnes Shearer Lineker Subs. Shilton Pearce Butcher Gerrard Ince Hoddle Beardsley Owen I never saw Banks, Moore, Charlton, Finney, Mathews and the like.
