I can easily believe that after he was told he would no longer be paid by Man Utd he "thought long and hard over the last few months" and eventually decided it meant he would not play for them any more.

 

He knew he was no longer good enough and could have had a great ending like Vidic but chose to believe we would continue to pay him for his name. He has been one of the best defenders in the country for many years but has to grow up and realise all good things come to an end. Better players than Rio have been moved on when the time came. Sad that he has gone without a word though.

 

Its obvious that during behind the scenes meetings with Van Gaal the present Utd squad has been discussed, so his departure is more likely down to the Dutch feller.
