Photo: PA Gus Poyet is confident he will still be Sunderland's head coach next season amid fevered speculation over his future. The 46-year-old Uruguayan has been linked with potential vacancies at both West Ham and Southampton in recent days, but has also found himself the subject of rumours that he could walk out of the Stadium of Light because of a power struggle behind the scenes. However, as a remarkable season drew to a close with a 3-1 home defeat by Swansea, crucially with the Black Cats still a Premier League club, Poyet insisted he was going nowhere. Asked if he expected to be in charge in August, he said: "Yes," before adding with a smile: "You are scaring me now. What do you know that I don't know? "The rumours are natural, there are so many rumours all the time. But that means you are doing something special or you are being recognised for something, whatever it is. "It could be the way your team plays, or it could be the achievement that you made or it could be that before, I didn't have on my CV Barclays Premier League experience and now I do in a very difficult situation." Poyet, who revealed he is in talks with "three or four" of the club's 11 out-of-contract and loan players, revealed he had already met owner and chairman Ellis Short to discuss the way forward, and will do so again after a short break, but was adamant there was nothing sinister about those talks. He said: "Every single manager in the world when he finishes the season has a meeting with the chairman of the football club, winning the league, going down, in the middle, having been named somewhere else, with contract, without contract - it's natural. "Every now and then when a manager says, 'I need to meet with the chairman to see where we are going', you all start to think, 'He's leaving' or 'He's not happy' or 'There's a problem', but it's nothing. "Yes, I want to know where we are going, if it's possible not to make the same mistakes that we have made in the last couple of years because I don't want to go through another year like this one."

GUS Poyet says he fully expects to be Sunderland boss next season despite intense speculation surrounding his future and stories linking him with a switch to West Ham United. The Black Cats’ head coach is aware of the rumours surrounding him but was insistent after yesterday’s final game of the season that it is business as usual for him as things stand. “Do I expect to be Sunderland manager next season?” he repeated to one questioner with a look of surprise. “Yes! Yes, I do. “There are so many rumours that go around at certain times. “But my way of thinking is that that is natural because everything is always going somewhere. “Me? I feel I’ve done well this season. “I don’t want to sound immodest, but I’ve kept the club up and proven myself in the Premier League. “Because I’ve done that, my way of thinking is that you are going to be linked with clubs – it is natural.” Part of the reason why it has been claimed Poyet would be tempted to take over at West Ham is because his family is based in London. But he rubbished that suggestion: “The only reason my family is in London is because my son Diego is in London and my wife is there for him. “If Diego left Charlton and moved to Borussia Monchengladbach, my family would be out there. “He’s 19 though and soon it might be time for him to look at living on his own.” Poyet also added that after a summer’s rest and media duties covering the World Cup, he will be looking forward to pre-season at Sunderland and a squad he will feel completely comfortable with. “Next season it will be my players, my group, my mentality,” he said. Prize money for this year was over £70M, which was about the total turnover for the year before, so hopefully we can spend a few bob freshening up the squad and signing Borini.
We would be absolutely stupid to let him go and he would be absolutely stupid to want to go. He has done the leg work and now can reap the benefits here. If he went to West Ham he will be no better off as a manager and you could argue worse off in reality having to start all over again. We can go forward with Gus in his first full season of preparation and building his team. Ellis Short isn't stupid or short on business nouse and retaining Poyet and financing a development (outs and ins tbh) is in the best interests of the the club. We desperately don't need another managerial merry go round this summer and simply have to retain Poyets services on a new 3 year deal. Yes Poyet has made mistakes but what manager hasn't and the crucial fact is he always learns from them and rectifies the error. Its his capacity for plan B, C and D that fills me with confidence about Poyet and I'm sure Short recognises that in his new man. Will Gus be our manager for the new season. IMO absolutely yes. Would I out money on the simple and obvious happening? Absolutely not. This is Sunderland AFC after all. We don't do straight forward.
