Got hit by an idiot on a roundabout. Always worth wearing a helmet even if it makes you look like a helmet. Your life is far more important than looking cool or feeling comfortable. Stay safe petal.
As I said to Jenners To my knowledge, 2 wheels, helmets all the time A few years ago one of my mates had this badass 3 wheeler and we never wore a helmet on that. Dont know if the law has changed now though. I want a Ducati but Mrs (am married) wont let me get one. Its prob for the best as I love going fast!
Studies show wearing a cycle helmet makes you more likely to suffer injuries in an accident due to a number of factors such as neck roll, increased risk taking and drivers seeing cyclists instead of people. Cycle helmets are tested to one hit with a force the equivalent of being dropped from three feet, most on sale don't even meet that standard. There is a stronger argument for using a helmet when walking than there is for cycling.
Had a short period between 8 -12 of smashing bikes (and myself up). Never progressed to motorbikes. My Old Man said he'd help me buy a car if I waited so I did - then I went to Unii and cars were way out the question for another 5 years or so! My cousin used to race bikes semi-pro. Never appealed to me though. Vowed never to get on one again after he was killed riding to work!
When i was 18 my life was saved by wearing a helmet. I was near ribchester speeding along on me deristricted yamaha racing scooter (****er did 90mph lol) on way home from work in preston, dusty road, lost all traction and went flying about 30 feat. Trashed me scooter and had a massive bruise on me leg. Recovery truck took me and the bike home. I had a shower and went out as you do at 18. No helmet on would have probably died it was unuasable after. Was a good night out though.
When walking? If not, why not? When cycling, you're effectively reducing protection by wearing a cycle helmet. Counter intuitive, but true.
Ooo, sorry to hear that. A lot of the time a motorbike will crash because of a poor car driver. Thats why they have their lights on in the day to be noticed more I used to BMX race for a team which was good fun, had a few smashes myself. Never raced motorbikes though, well not officially. I'd like to have a go in one of them sidecar racing machines, that close to the tarmac must be pretty thrilling One of these things please log in to view this image
But you're at far more risk walking. Why not wear one then? See above posts for a few reasons why wearing one on a bike adds to the risk.
I know. It served its purpose at least. Not a fan of motorbikes. Was just a cheap way of doing 40miles to work and back every day. Half the journey time if a train and a fraction of the price so made sense.
Eh? Now you're confusing me on purpose! I saw the reasons but will still wear one And I dont need one when walking, thats daft
Youre not really. Walking you do a few mph and the forces involved are much less. Try tripping up on your next walk and compare that with coming off a bike at speed. Now if a bike smashes into you. Helmets going to do nothing.
It collapsed at a force your head would easily stand. (a maximum three foot drop) In reality it most likely did nothing to protect you. Why would it, it's just a polystyrene cup.
