Would Luke Varney be a decent replacement for David Nugent? http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/transfer-news/Portsmouth-set-to-replace-David-Nugent-with-Derby-striker-Blackpool-hero-Luke-Varney-article751178.html
Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill is lining up a deal for Derby County striker Luke Varney in a deal worth £750,000, reports the Daily Mirror. The Pompey boss is ready to launch a bid as he tries to find a goalscorer to replace striker David Nugent. The one-cap England international has left Fratton Park on a free transfer, leaving Cotterill short of someone to lead his line. Despite their recent financial woes, Portsmouth do have money to spend and Cotterill has identified Varney as his man. The £750,000 fee has been agreed with the Rams for a player who showed his Premier League pedigree on-loan at Blackpool last season. The ex-Crewe striker is happy to play his football in the Championship next season despite proving he can find the net in the top-flight. Derby will pick up a bigger fee if Varney fires Portsmouth to the Premier League.
Fratton Park seems to have a detrimental effect on the scoring capabilities of Strikers, hope -if- we get him, -it- doesn't give him a bad case of club foot. ;/
Lets hope so - I saw him play a couple of times last season for Blackpool and he looks like he could be quite handy in the Championship. I am liking these targets that SC is looking at - Konchesky, Howard, Varney, Pearce - all very very good players and with the 8/9 we currently have, not a bad little side we will have!
He even put a couple of goals apparently past our "sashy" friends down the road a couple of seasons ago, whilst on loan to Sheff. Wednesday. We haven't even signed him yet, but already I am warming to the fella !
I think he would do well for us. How about the rumour that Pearce is interested in coming back to us from Bournemouth?
The Snooze are reporting that he has sent out a "come and get me plea" to Pompey......very much the same as Brian Howard did a few weeks ago.
