SAINTS would potentially need to break their record transfer fee in order to sign Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard.

12 months left on his currant contract, so I think that is a tad high. I reckon Leicester will throw a bucket load of money at City & clinch the deal. But have to agree with the majority, he is a very useful player with some good years to come.
 
How do you value the right player? If NA sees something in a particular player that is just right for his team and plans, then how do you value that? The price is almost irrelevant. If the 'market' value of a player is 1m and Nigel really thinks he's the man and we have to pay more, so what? The chairman is prudent and if signings are successful then the "value" of that player increases.
 
But its also got to be in line with other players. How would other feel if we sign 'the right' guy for £4M & pay him twice as much as everyone else. Then after some lackluster performances he decides to rock the boat.
You've got to consider the big picture imo.
 
I don't think you can get a quality championship striker with premier league potential for less than £3m. Prices are going up these days, and if NC is willing to spend it, we should go for him as I think he's the best striker in the championship.
Still, we probably won't get him anyway if Leicester and Forest are interested.

I agree. I was really referring to the fee, not wages. What happens though if we get promoted again or we have opportunity to sign a freebie on gods wages? There will always be a certain amount of disparity in wages even within a structure; it's the managers job to get the balance right and manage the group.

How much does God get paid? In all honesty I think £4 million is a bit too much to be spending, we only just got promoted from League 1 remember. Think there are better players who we need more around for less than that.
 
He is a very good player and if you want these kind of footballer's you are going to have to compete with other teams in terms of transfer fees. Leicester seem to have set their stall out and are really gunning for promotion this year so looks like we will be battling to sign similar players. Only having one year left on his deal does make 4 million a bit steep however.
 
I reckon we're likely to play with 3 upfront or 1 upront with 2 wingers, however you want to look at it. The 442/424 with Lallana and Chamberlain on the wings would leave our fullbacks exposed and our midfield dominated (long balls up to Lambert).

That's with the team as it is. Looking at those, the front 3 is a good as we're going to get, so I could only see backup players coming in here. At more than £3m, Maynard wouldn't be one of them. Maynard himself came from Crewe when they weren't in the Championship, so we may be able to sign another young player from L1 or L2 with potential to improve.

From those 2 teams, it seems like the midfield and defence are the priorities.
 
Sooner see the transfer budget going on a new CD than another striker. Big J has been a good servant in time he's been with us and I can see him moving onto the coaching staff in the future, but he will struggle with pace in this division and he needed resting between weekends last season - its not going to get any easier for him this season.

Am a great believer that you build for the future through the backline working up through the team - there is enough talent already in the midfield/fowards to create chances. If you don't leak goals, you cannot loose games... so please let us spend the budget on a CD.
 
We need to bring in a big Scandinavian CB, like Lundekvam, Svensson or that bloke a few years back Sajeis?
