Actually a reasonable comment. There is an argument that Mutch and Noone (when picked and fit) were also good performers but if Caulker was to go (I think £8m is about right) then we are left with Cala, Turner and Hudson (there is also Connolly but there must be doubts about his fitness having been injured 95% of the season). Other than Cala all are known quantities at Championship level. Hudson would seem the obvious one to pick up the mantle if Caulker goes. However, there must be doubts about his fitness too. He is aged 32 (same birthday as me, didn't know that before), missed all bar 2 league and 4 cup games this season and was unfit for the tail end of 2012/13. There must be some fitness concerns and he won't be getting any quicker (like me also). When he came to us it took a season for him to settle in and, if fit, we can't afford that luxury again next season. Personally, I want Caulker to stay. He will do a great job in the Championship and OGS has the summer to get his defence organised. With mistakes made with other signings I can only hope that for the better signings their contracts have a reduced salary package in the event of relegation - perhaps with a good bonus for getting us back up again. It appears he has said he wants to stay and someone said his girlfriend is at uni in Cardiff so happy days if we keep him. As ever though money and ambition are likely to be the loudest voices.
He is the one player I would like us to try to sign from your lot (should we confirm survival) - cracking defender - didn;t have a great one against us recently but that was more due to the sending off and the shaking up of things. How anyone can say Cardiff's defence would be better without him is beyond me
i know its a wind up but if he goes i doubt the club would have set a release clause that would see us lose any money on the overall cost of signing himâ¦.. though nothing surprises me with the way some clubs lose all sense of rational thinking when promotedâ¦.
Captained your team to relegation. I think asking for 8m would probably be a bit steep and seen as too much of a risk from potential buying clubs. 4-5m would be my guess. I always thought from the start that Caulker is a solid player when alongside a captain, but he himself is not yet a leader. What is he, like 21? Hes had one decent season in the prem in a team that finished in the lower half of the table (us when we finished 11th). There is nothing there to warrant a figure as high as 8m imo.
Don't know if I can agree to everything you wrote above. Caulker was forced to cover two areas of central defence this season, at least that is how I interpreted the performances. And as for his time with us, we had a team who were all from the lower leagues and he was a pivotal player in our respectable defensive performance. The fact he is already showing some leadership skills and his age being so young, I'd say £8M is about the right price in the current climate. I am sure the Cardiff fans here would agree £8M for Caulker is a better deal than United paid for Zaha.
Chico, Ash (captain of Wales), Bartley and Amat will share the CB duties again Why would we want a central defender (and some have mentioned Marshall) from team that has the second highest goals against in the league, second highest deficit goal difference and is relegated (probably as bottom of the league)? Caulker has looked good amongst he dross. Yes, he scored against the Swans but that is nothing to brag about this season. You really have learned nothing form your (very) brief brush with the elite, have you? Parteeeee
Well I'd take Caulker back in a heartbeat and sell Ash and Chico to do so if needed. Maybe we could do a swap deal
Caulker's loyal to Cardiff then!!!! Agent Caulker - Once a Jack Always a Jack (Doubt he'd come to Swansea to be fourth choice.)
i'd try and tempt united with a £5,000,000 offer for zaha (we all saw what he could do in the championship, not necessarily against us)
