Well we have missed out on our second transfer target Craig Conway. He is a winger who could play both flanks so would seem a replacement for Buckley if we had have got him, and so, on that basis, I'm not too dissappointed as i think Wichelow more than makes up for losing Buckley. He met Malky earlier in the year was impressed by him so that has apparently influenced his decision. Still one out of two targets isn't too bad so far. The full (well fullish) story is here http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/9097090.Mackay_snaps_up_long_time_Watford_target_Conway/
^^ This Seems strange it took so long for anyone to sign him, then Malky is in the job a few days and it's done! Makes you wonder if he was waiting to see what happened with Malky... maybe he got told to wait *cough cough*
Just seems a bit fishy to me.... And if Malky/Cardiff contacted the guy saying wait until he's their manager, then just a little bit more than annoying!
It may be that his Agent knew (from MM) that MM would be at another club and advised him to wait and see where MM ended up?
More money at Cardiff as well..he was in talks with Rangers so maybe was going there till MM moved. TBH We have our own good crop of wide men coming through and this lad we've got in can play out wide so if can keep Cowie the squad will have a few options as wingers (even Deeney!) Maybe Dyche will play little Mingoia (spelling) out wide rather than looking lost in a central role. Be more annoying if Malky takes Wiggins or even Taylor.
Who knows, doubt we will ever find out! One minute we seem favourite, then seem out of the running, then Malky goes and he follows! But if a player wants to be there for the manager rather than the shirt, then I'm not overly fussed! Let's hope Forsyth has a much better season
Now, now Kev, it sounds like you're questioning Mackay's integrity. You know what happens when you question a Watford manager's integrity...
Think it seems strange that a deal was taking so long to be done and then suddenly he decides that he wants to play for Cardiff, but that is just how it goes sometimes. I might be mistaken, but I heard we were trying to sign him incase Cowie left. So hopefully this means the board will be reluctant to let Cowie go anywhere.
Kev, introducing conspiracy theories - whatever next? This will upset the happy clappers no end. Clearly we as fans need to understand Watford's ranking. At 23rd or 24th we need to be that bit cuter and be able to act fast on a hunch. People need to stop dreaming about C M S and big transfer fees as it is clear we are shopping in the bargain basement. There is an established auction for Wiggins as they have already turned down £300K from Charlton. As for Cowie, if a big bid for him comes in (maybe from "a Cardiff) then he will be gone. The key for us is not to be dragged into a naïve "happy clapper" land. We need to retain the right to question.
Don't think there is much danger here of failing to do that. I'm not surprised at Conway's move and it does look as though he was warned to wait. However we should remember that Cardiff are supposed to be fishing in deeper waters than us - MM knows he is supposed to deliver promotion whereas SD knows that avoiding relegation is his priority.
I think most of us realise what transfer pool we are fishing in... and fully believe Conway was in that pool. Obviously just rumour but did sound like we had a very good chance of signing him... until Cardiff came in! You just wonder when Cardiff came in for him.... We are still a pretty good pull, especially for young players. Hopefully their agents identify Watford as a team that develops it's youngsters (Not just Malky) and even if it is 'only' a route into 'bigger and better' things in England.
