Inter-owned Nigerian midfielder Joel Obi is on the radar of Newcastle United, according to the latest press reports in Italy.

The 22-year-old is currently at Parma on a season loan from the Nerazzurri and is unlikely to command a place in Walter Mazzarri’s first-team plans in the 2014-15 campaign.

Obi joined Inter in 2005 and was an important part of several successful youth sides, including a title-winning team of 2008.

Jose Mourinho championed Obi’s cause when he took over at Inter having been impressed by his potential and he was included in the squad that won the Champions League final, even though he didn’t play.

It was under Rafa Benitez that Obi made his senior debut for Inter against Werder Bremen in a Champions League clash in September 2010 and he made his first Serie A appearance a month later.

However, regular first-team football in Italy hasn’t been easy to come by and just as a switch to Parma looked set to improve his playing time, he has been dogged by injuries.

It seems that Obi faces a race against time to regain full fitness if he is to secure a place in Nigeria’s squad for the World Cup.

Obi is under contract at Inter until 2017 and could be brought back to base for next season if Inter secure a place in the Europa League and need a bigger squad.

But a loan switch looks likely according to Calciomercato.com and the opportunity to test himself in a new country for Newcastle could be tempting.
