I actually watched that parking technique on more than one occasion<yikes> They also use the shunt to get out of tight spots as well<yikes> Luckily we were able to use the buildings underground carpark for the first weekend then I left the car in the outskirts with one of my wifes colleagues! The carparking charges in Paris are simply OTT!

When we go for a visit I usually park at a hotel with free parking on the outskirts, then use the trains. Last year at Versailles it cost €8 for six hours, which I think is cheaper than Watford town centre for that period of time.

We got quoted 125 Euros for 5 days parking in an underground carpark<yikes> But as you say, let the train take the strain:)

I remember going on holiday with my folks, back in the seventies, Dad getting lost and ending up towing a caravan up the Champs Elysees!

The Paris Peripherique is fine actually. If you wish to change lane simply indicate your movement and go. The whole system seems to work on faith that the car behind will let you and not hit you.

It is when you get onto some of the back streets that the fun really begins. You suddenly find that in a one way street the road is blocked by a parked lorry delivering goods to a shop or office. You can either be totally deaf to the horns behind you and wait for it to move, or take the acceptable route via the pavement and only scatter a few pedestrians, and they are probably used to it anyway.

Thanks for all the good wishes. The experts have no idea when the shaking is going to stop. There are some suburbs which are going to be abandonned but we haven't been told officially which those are. Everybody knows, of course. What seems to be happening is that an old fault has been activated for the first time in thousands of years so there will be a long period of siesmic adjustment.

I've just got into my office and books are all over the floor so I will have to tidy up again. I work on the seventh floor of an eight floor building so Mrs NZ gets worried about me being there. My real worry is getting home if there is another big aftershock. There are three ways to my home: one is over a bridge that gets closed from time to time; the second is up on the hills but that road has been closed since February because it is strewn with rocks. On the third route there are big cracks in the road and if they get much bigger I won't be able to get the car passed them.

Sorry to go on but it is getting a bit stressful.

Oh NZ, it sounds horrific, no wonder you're stressed. I know it's a stupid comment, but please take care. I'm sorry you're going through it, i hope it ends soon. View attachment 4665 for you and Mrs NZ, whose worry i completely understand.
