To be honest it will always be subjective anyway and I agree that Messi will stay where he is if he knows whats good for him so we will probably never know what he could do to an average team. Like you just looking forward to seeing what Messi can do when he hits top gear. Should be a footballing delight! :)

Talking about Messi with Argentina under a decent manager, after a quick google of the chap I came across this

    http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/3710...d-argentina-still-have-work-to-do-before-they

Against Albania, and just a friendly, and just one game. But promising stuff. <ok>

Though depends on his ambition - by the time he is 27 he will have won everything with Barcelona and be rich beyond dreams of richness - if he has the balls and desire he could then move on to another country (I would say Italy) and see what he can really do without all the sublimeness of the players around him

Yeah I agree it would be nice (and interesting) to see him test himself like that. I'm not going to hold my breath though. I really doubt it will happen.

So right. Was chatting to a couple of mates the other night, one Blackburn the other Arsenal. They are both totally fed up with football and saying they will take no notice next season because it has become a financial merry-go-round with overpaid primadonnas and a predictable conclusion (e.g. only the mega rich clubs have any chance of winning the premier league).

I'm not that cynical about it yet but I am getting closer with every passing season!

Maradona looked good even when surrounded by mediocre players, who themselves raised their game, inspired by his presence. Look what he did for Napoli.

I'm convinced I will never see a better player.

I think its too early to compare, but if Messi keeps at his current level for the next 3 years then he has to be better!

Unless he wins world cup and moves to another club in them 3 years then maybe.... but for now he can only ever be as good as Pele for all the reasons I and some others like Donkey Toon and Frank Pingel have mentioned

Perfect time for the Shola swap deal then, let him prove himself over here while allowing Shola to ascend to his true level.

Total madness! But I really like it. Maybe we can sell it to him as a social/scientific experiment. Offer him a nobel prize for physics (sure we can bribe somebody, they gave a Peace prize to Henry Kissinger ffs!) and tell him that he could go down in history as the first footballer to win one!

That's funny, a lot of pundits say Pele was the greatest ever, but he even looks **** in compilations. I can remember at the World Cup last year when they showed a montage of him and the pundits (think it might've been Shearer) were going "Oh those goals bring back memories". He only actually scored one of them. The rest were either saved or missed the target. <doh>

    This.

Has anyone mentioned Cruyff? Pretty much reinvented how football was played, and it's his philosophies that the Barcelona sides of the last twenty years have played to.

He did score over 1000 goals in his career to be fair to the guy. And his fellow Brazilian team mates think amazingly of him. There must have been something there!

Cruyff to me is on a par with Platini - a whole league below Maradona

Yes he did which is a credit to him, but the opposition in the Brazilian leagues back then were basically non league standard imho

That's also including friendlies and stuff. I've always got the impression he was in a great team, but was singled out by pundits because they couldn't say Garrincha and Jairzinho. Bit before my time though. <whistle>
