There used to be a time (I'm sure), where fans would be backing/in the corner of other clubs from the same country - especially at this stage of European competitions. It seems now that other fans of English clubs would happily see Chelsea go out tonight. We're not alone in this, and I'm sure it would be the same if someone else was in this position.

Has there been a move away from the allegience for clubs from the same country, and if so, why?

One thought might be that English clubs have a significant number of non-English players/staff/owners - I don't know. To be honest, unless it's Liverpool, I'm more than happy for other English clubs to do well/win - as long as it's not against us.

    What do others think?

Generally speaking, I'm happy for English clubs to do well enough to keep England's co-ef up but that aside, I want them all to fail other than us! That is clubs I'd consider to be rivals. For instance, wouldn't have minded Swansea, Wigan etc doing well in the Europa and was pleased when Boro got to a final recently, even Fulham to an extent.

However with the daily banter and rivalry that goes on with the spuds, gooners, scouse, mancs etc, can't bring myself to hope they do well in Europe. A major part of football is bragging rights and banter.

Don't think it'll be as event light as the first leg. Both teams need to score baring a 0-0 then pens. We have to win, they know an away goal could be very important. It wont be gung ho but I expect drama!

I tend to go with whoever I'm enjoying watch play and have backed Athletico to win it for ages now.

I never want the Mancs to win it though.

You're right Croc! I can remember always cheering on the British teams involved in international competition! I still like to see them do well, BUT NOT as well as us! However I get the impression that too many of our countrymen(and women) don't feel the same these days! National pride aint what it used to be, unfortunately!

When it was mainly British players I felt like that. These days all Prem teams (or the top ones anyway) have very little English connection other than where the stadium is located. Can't whip up any patriotic zeal any more. That said, good luck tonight. Real v Chelsea will be fascinating - a real clash of styles.

Don't really mind anyone else getting far in Europe except Liverpool really.

I hate all other British sides except my own team, and the only time I ever want to see a rival win in Europe is purely for selfish reasons. I would prefer a title rival to go far in Europe just so they have more fixtures, so as there's more chance of them slipping up in the title race. Though I would never want them to actually win the trophy.

I celebrate a goal against one of our British rivals, especially Liverpool or City, nearly as much as I'd celebrate one of our goals. I just love seeing them fail.

The reasons why I am like this, is because I cannot take City or Liverpool fans gloating when they do well, it really does grind my gears.

I don't hate Chelsea as much as the other 2, as I'm only friendly with 1 Chelsea supporter, but il still be rooting for Atletico Madrid, as I cannot stand that Mourinho prat <laugh>

Usually I support any English team in Europe (except United).

I'm a little miffed at the result this weekend though- so I'm having a hard time supporting Chelsea tonight. If they pull off a miracle and get through to the final I will support them. Right now though... I'm happy that parking the bus failed- and the ensuing attempt to play football against a big club also failed.

When English sides were predominantly filled with British players then it was far easier to support other clubs in European competitions. That is now a thing of the past so whilst I may watch other sides I can't say that I'm too fused if they get defeated.

It's not easy to cheer on a team you spend all year hoping to see beaten. I'm a bit like Shergar, it's not so much seeing a rival do well, more knowing their fans will be full of it. I think BM2 and those who remember always cheering other English teams along, come from an era (like me) when the stakes were not so high, and especially the media wasn't so rabid. Were now conditioned to brag when we win , blame someone else when we lose, and above all , not take responsibility for our actions. Sportsmanship has taken a hit I think, with the rise of 24hrs a day replays and "expert" analysts. This year I will be cheering on Atletico, who have done incredibly well to reach the finals.
