How very Pardew. I adore Mauricio like a brother to be honest, but I actually feel quite uncomfortable with ridiculous length contracts. I'd somehow rather it was a three year deal rather than a 7 year. I realise that seems rather hypocritical, but do you get what I mean?!

Mind you, I'd far rather he signed a 7 year deal than no deal at all.

If it's like Pardew's it wouldn't be that bad, his has a clause that means he can be sacked and only get a fraction of the compensation he would normally get with such a long contract.

Somehow, once you get past 3 or 4 years, in some senses the longer it is after that, the more it's meaning seems to be diluted. I'm not sure that makes sense, as for me it's a psychological thing, but do you get where I'm coming from?

I'm not sure about a 7 year deal. I'm very much sold on Pochettino, I think he's great, but I do worry. The "next level" in our progression is a huge step, and if we don't significantly invest then we'll be stuck in the 8th-12th kind of bracket for a few years. Then, I guarantee it, whether it's really his fault or not, people will be turning on Pochettino and blaming him for it, and the length of the deal would be one of the main arguments.

Think 7 years would show commitment to MP and to long term planning...would probably have get out clauses for both parties as 7 years is a long time in football. The only problem with a 3 year contract (which would include the 1 year he still has on the contract) is that we could be back to panicking in a couple of years....mild concern in one year, panic in two years, and meltdown near the end.

I don't see a problem with it, as long as there are sensible precautions against having to pay out an unusually high sum of money should he need to be dispensed with. A club like ours, with a focus on long-term planning, needs security and Pochettino will feel more invested in the long-term plan if he is relatively assured of being around to benefit from it.

Even if we do end up failing to invest and relying on the youth system entirely, I don't really foresee a situation where we will be playing with the total lack of commitment that Newcastle are currently, and I think most fans are smart enough to tell the difference between a lack of investment from the board and poor performance by the coaching staff (though perhaps the Newcastle situation indicates otherwise...)

7 years doesn't have to actually mean 7yrs.

Well no, I think everybody knows that, and to be honest, if Poch was here building a dynasty for the next 7 years, I for one would be utterly delighted. It just feels odd to me to have that length of contract. Did Fergie or Wenger ever have 7 year contracts?

It's the nature of the beast Dan. People blame who they see as responsible, without giving things too much thought, I'm afraid. Besides, there are easy targets. A football manager is the showy, non-playing face of the club, so if say Newcastle play badly it's all Pardew's fault. Conveniently forgetting that Cabaye was sold in January, for real profit, and he was the keyest of key players in their side. He has proved to be irreplaceable so far, and Toon will continue to struggle under their present system until they can find another player of similar key influence. Things can't necessarily be turned round almost immediately these days, because of the transfer window system.

Similarly, Poch could be criticised should the Board fail to deliver on the ambitions that tempted Mauricio to the club, and therefore it won't necessarily be his fault. He won't suddenly become a bad manager for Saints, or at all. I think many fans would realise this anyway.

Pardew is an arse though, in fairness.

You're quite right though TSS - lots of Spurs fans have been saying to me "well he's done okay, but not brilliant" and I'm thinking "hold on, this is basically the same team (bar Lovren) that NA had teetering around relegation, he's done brilliantly. Other fans perspectives are even more skewed than the most skewy ones of our fans. If he stays but doesn't get the financial support to strengthen this summer, we'll likely dip to about 10th-12th next season potentially and people will start saying "oh well, flash in the pan". Not true.

The fickle nature of football, eh?

Could be 3yr contract with a 4yr add on if targets are met?

<laugh> I don't mind if the guy is wrong, just as long as Pochettino signs a contract. I wasn't trying to still make him right, just saying how the contract can be laid out. 7yr contract(if there are objectives etc) doesn't worry me at all.

Joseph Stalin was particularly fond of those 5 year plans.

Well, I think he himself would agree with you on that point, LTL. I think his latest actions and punishment have made him take a good long look at himself.
