Check out this gallery. http://www.doingthe92.com/cards/display_card_team_set.asp?step=175&ID=42&sid=69 Came across it after doing a search for bonnybobby. The people who were having a go at me the other day about my commitment to SAFC, should have a look too. This was MY team as a teenager, there is enough class there to get any one through the gates of Roker Park. I stand by my view we need more class, to fill the SOL. Not journeymen. Sess and Gyan are a step in the right direction.
FFS that was nearly the team i had on my school bag but im sure i had Mullhall and Stuckey on there somewhere
now we know where bobbyparks got his name, never heard of him before......mind i was only just born when that team was out. but some names that will last for-ever. now we want our turn to see some trophies, not just you old buggers, you've seen it, now it's time rest of us ... ok, one more time for the elderly....that'll stop them moaning....eeeee in my time..
I had so much teenage "man" love for Joe Baker it was embarrassing. And I've mentioned before about feeling the ground move as Big Cec ran past up the wing.
You old git MR, I've been saying for months that we should be looking at grafters who can produce the odd bit of magic rather than the marquee signings. That team was all about hard work mate and not binning it when it got a bit rough.
MackemsRule. Cheeky question but how old are you? Think it might be a couple of years on me because of what you've just said. I'm coming up 52. Where have the years gone? On that picture of the squad, remember Martin Harvey? Cracking N.Ireland international - scored the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with England bout '71 at Wembley. Baker? A canny c/f but past it when we got him. Harris? Paid too much from (Burnley)? Of course Monty, Toddo, Hughes, Tueart. We are Sunderland say we are Sunderland!!!!!!!!!!!!
56 mate just noticed it's gone from under my name. Not to shabby for a old second division team. Internationals and future internationals in that lot.
Are these tin types? I'm amazed that they aren't oil paintings with the age of some of our veteran posters, speaking of which when you remember your childhood are they in black and white? Only kidding fellas, it's always nice to hear the old folks recall the old days.
These were the collecting cards of the time, I had stopped collecting a couple of years before. Not sure about these but the ones I recall collecting were the ones with the slab of bubbly in.
Can't say mate, well before my time, but it goes to show SAFC has been around before the majority of us and after we're long gone it will continue. you never know my grand kids may see us lift a half decent trophy.
The ones with the bubbly in, you needed a coin to reveal the answer to a question! Anyone remember that? I had Harry Redknapp about 50 times (in card form swapsies - nothing dirty). The chut was awful but the cards and questions were great. Please don't let me down! Someone remember this!!!! (and Jublees, and Joseph's where you got your first proper football boots; and Hodgson's where you got your first proper jeans or Brutus shirt) C'mon! Joe Baker was crap x
Oh there's a question i'll leave you with before i go to bed.. Grafters or Crafters? Hard working, works for the team, or, a lazy twat you does his job and can turn a match but nowt else.....decisions...
Good thread and a trip down memory lane - they were a team who played and worked for each other and to their strengths. I sometimes forget these times and with each passing year the memories they become a bit more faded.
Dont get maudlin here. We had grafters and crafters but too many floaters in this team. It wasn't a golden age. We were quite rightly relegated. Everton stuffed us and Liverpool tried so hard to give us the win - at home - and we couldn't. 60@s is my first love because it is when I woke up to football and my team. Got rid of Hurley too soon and too easily. What club would do that to an absolute icon? We have over all the decades. Ah well. Better go. Red red wine x
I remember that Liverpool game, they tried every way possible to let us win. Apparently it was the only time Paisley never gave a dressing room team talk.
Sorry to defer pont, but you are wrong. Your thinkin of mid-80's away to liverpool. We won 1 - 0 i think; little Stanny Cummings scoring? Paisley said "if it was a horse race, there'd be a stewards enquiry" Our players were fallin over a crate of champagne placed in our dressing room at half time! x
Bloody hell. What would Hughes, Kerr, Monty, Todd, Harvey, Tueart, Ashurst be worth in todays market. Toddy alone would be worth £100m if Lescott is valued at £24m. One of the finest centre halves for a generation and sadly another we let go. A fellow Chester lad (I know Colin very well or should I say he has known me since I was a baby) and a very nice bloke as well. All of the above would walk into our team today, no sweat.
