Bring in free transfers, 35m from the AC sale still barely untouched, selling anything that moves ( including Shola ) could MA be about ready to cut his losses and run......... ?

It just all seems part of Ashley's desire to get rid of the high earners and replace them with younger players on cheaper wages.

Nolan.................. Has gone and the reason why NUFC didn't keep him was to the length of contract that he desired.
Barton...........Pretty much the same scenario as Nolan but on higher wages.
Colo........... On high wages and his contract is coming up for renegotiation.
    Jonas..........On high wages.

I am making an educated guess that Nolan was on £40k pw, Barton £60k, Colo £75-80k and Jonas £60k, making a total WEEKLY wage bill of between £235,000 to £240,000. MA may be thinking that he could bring in 4 decent younger players at a cost of around £140-150k per week and save the club around £5 million per year. Add Smith to that list who is probably on around £70k per week and this takes the annual saving to around £8.5 - £9 million!!!

The initial cost in transfers of bringing these players in would only be a little more than you would expect to receive back in transfer fees for the outgoing players.

You beat me to it, Shola doesn't move!!

If we can get north of 14 million for Jonas I'd sell him. He will be on more than 50k cos didn't we sign him after he bought his contract out? He's probably on closer to 70

Replacing him with n zogbia would make sense another Frenchman but doesn't he want big money too? Whoever replaces Jonas will be on half his wages

  9. Barton deserves his longer contract but Ashley is a tight bastard
Coloccini shouldn't be sold, he should take a pay cut. We can't afford to sell him.
Jonas, take a pay cut to stay

Or in Shola's case, some things that don't

EDIT: Maybe that's why we'll never get rid of him!

I'd rather offer them what they want and not have to replace them with unproven players

Exactly this it is basic business economics and very sensible. Also all of the players mentioned are replaceable (we aren't talking about Messi or Ronaldo here) and players of equal ability are available who would accept lower wages.

Having half a dozen vastly overpaid players inhibits our ability to sign the other good players we need to move us on, because we have a finite wage budget and too much of it is going to a select few who are not really worth what they are getting paid.

But aren't his Mazy runs, incredible dives and his ridiculous hair three great reasons to keep him on 70k?

Jonas is so frustrating to watch play and doesn't produce much besides dribbling too much...but he did stick with us through everything and we are running out of quality senior players to help build and shape these young additions. Just look at Arsenal, lots of young players with no muscle and no senior leadership, and look how much of a mess they are.

Yeah what a mess. Could have won the league this year, qualified for the champions league and very competitive in every competition they took part in. I hope we never experience their problems!
