Perhaps we should have got him in the close season. He seems like a player who would fit much better into the style that Hughton plays. Although Hughton would probably have sucked all the life out of him like he does every striker. As for the future, it depends who the manager is, which players he wants to keep, which players want to stay, what kind of football he wants to play. It's too early to decide anything. What seems undeniable to me is that years of progress have been wasted and we have to start all over again from scratch.

Not really thought of it like that but you have a point. Lambert moulded mainly lower league players into a good squad (Pilks, Huddersfield, E Benno, Brighton, Fox, Colchester etc)
Hughton has assembled more in terms of wealth / cost, but hasn't managed to get them firing as a cohesive unit - which is why we're in this (partly) self-inflicted ****e <yikes>

So as VC says, whoever gets the gig / job (poisoned chalice? :emoticon-0112-wonde)
next has some major restructuring to contend with - never mind trying to rebuild shattered confidence levels.
 
My problem with Jordan Rhodes is that beyond finishing he contributes next to nothing to the team. My Blackburn-supporting housemate says it's infuriating when the team aren't on top, because he offers nothing. He might apply the finishing touch to a move, but he's highly unlikely to have been involved in the build-up play. Whilst I suppose you can get away with that more in the championship, I'd argue we've already got a player in that mould in Becchio. Becchio may want a move in the summer (and who could blame him?), but under a new manager and in a league he's proven in, he might be worth holding on to. He may be older than Rhodes, but equally he's not going to cost us £5m or so to get.

I feel you're exaggerating saying these years have been wasted if we go down. We are far ahead of where anyone expected us to be 5 years ago. We have become entirely debt free, we have improved our playing staff immensely and we have gotten 3 season of top tier football. Going down is not the end of the world. It might even be a blessing in disguise as we may bounce straight back up with a stronger squad this time and be in a better position to properly establish ourselves.

Of course it might all go tits up and we get stuck in the Chumpionship for another few seasons but at least we'd have something to play for there. I really have started to lose interest in the Prem because it has become far too predictable. The fact that Liverpool potentially winning the league is considered this incredible turn up for the books shows just how insular the top teams are. Liverpool are still one of the biggest clubs in the country with a hugely expensive squad and one of the best strikers in the world. Sure they haven't won the league for a long time and they've had some poor seasons by their standards but it's still not that shocking that they might win it. If Stoke or Southampton we're challenging for the title, that would be exciting, but as it is, it's just a case of picking one of the 4 or 5 teams who will win the league and then everybody else just try not to get relegated. Wheres the fun in that!
 
It's a bit of a depressing thought really, a year ago or so we were disagreeing about signing Championship chugger's because they were not an ambitious enough option or didn't mould enough into the team, let's hope it's no back to the days of 'We can't afford them' and all that bollocks.

No matter which league we're in we need a solid leader on the pitch Martin and Bassong are not leadership material, we've lacked this more then anything this season.
