Totally agree - and having the incredibly unbiased niall quinn say it was a good decision doesnt really help. If he had gone down, Niall, it wouldnt have been in the box and we would have had a player sent off but probably still 1-0. Id have taken that right now. I know you are a sunderland fan, but you are being paid to pretend to be objective.

Must say - absolutely horrifying defending for both that and sunderland's first goal. And an embarrassment to the jersey almost to a man. Horrific performance alround, and I feel truely sorry for the poor sods who went to the other side of the country to watch this rubbish, Unless a real miracle happens.

How? The numpty was trying to pull him down in the box, just because the ref played the advantage, maybe a tad harsh though.

Problem is he gave sunderland the best of both worlds.

The foul was outside the box. If he had gone down outside the box, I would have freely accepted the red card and free kick.

He allowed Wickham to carry on and therefore the goalscoring opportunity wasnt stopped.

The foul, took place outside the box and stopped inside.

Exactly. The offence started outside the box. It's either a free kick outside or let him continue and take his chance to score.

Its poor defending by cardiff that has seen them two goals down not the penalty, they have been poor all season in defense and that has been the clubs main downfall. Its a shame as they look quite good otherwise. Ole should quit after this game as he dont have a clue about defending and is relying on marshal far too much instead of fixing the appalling defense...

He gave him the chance to score by playing the advantage. He didn't score so then gave them another chance with the penalty?? That's not right. Would accept a free kick and red card or even if he'd gave the penalty straight away.

Agree with the overriding sentiment - our defending all season has been disgusting. We try and play the ball out from the back all the time when we patantly dont have the players to do it. It is like watching a child continually stick their fingers in a plug until they get an electric shock...

I think after playing the advantage, there was none, so a yellow card outside the box would have been most refs decision!....... <ok>

Nat, he played "advantage", Wickham never regained any advantage, therefore it was rightly called back. Had Marshall not hounded him, and Wickham then missed, then he would have wasted his advantage. But that was never the case. Wickham never got any advantage of the play going on.

To be fair you shouldn't play an advantage on a penalty it either is one or not. But agree that Cala got himself into that situation he should of just cleared it when he had the chance.

If i was baby face now i would go for broke and play everyone going forward and hope marshal can save any break away chances, Just go for it as there is nothing to lose now, Take some big risks and you never know a goal might fire cardiff up.

Look, now I have calmed down a bit I can see how the rule book could be used to justify the decision in its entirity. my anger stems from a combination of the following:

There have literally been too many incidents to count this season where we have had blatant penalties, by whatever interpretation of the rulebook you use, not awarded, aswell as incidents where opponents should blatantly have been sent off not given (spurs keeper comes to mind) - i Know we are all a bit biased, but there is no way on earth it has evened out this season.

The size of the occasion surely calls for a small amount of common sense - Cala pulled him back BECAUSE he was outside the area. Yes, he deserved to go, but in those ridiculously fine margins, when the foul has clearly taken place outside the area, and you are about to condemn a team to relegation, I would have thought you wouldnt go the whole whack and award a penalty aswell unless you were certain.

As an example - would he have sent Skrtel off and awarded a penalty against liverpool in exact same circumstances to prevent them winning the league if he wasnt 200% certain?

And that is what annoys me, the selective use and application of rules to double wham teams in the most big of occasios...

Not really, as had he scored, then there would be no need to give a pen, a penalty is no different to a free kick, other than the circumstances to take it, so it shouldn't matter, advantage should be allowed to be played.

And talking about that, its another thing many refs are useless at, something they perceive to be a foul outside the box, is not when inside the box, its the same thing, a foul,, just depends on whether its a free kick or penalty.

Had Wickham scored, you would still have 11 on the pitch. Dowd tried giving you the benefit (in a strange way if you think about it), by playing advantage. But it never materialised, so he had no choice but to call it back, and send your player off.

I am biased. You (within reason) are not. However:

In the immediate aftermath of the incident he was one on one with Marshall. On what planet is that not a 'clear goalscoring opportunity'? He chose to take it wide rather than shooting.

If he had gone down, his opportunity to score is lost and Cala is rightly sent off. (and its a free kick as the foul was outside the box)
