Which one? Neither were. What about our two penalty shouts Tom?

They were unlucky not to get the first one. If the ref feels it was a dive, he must see in slow motion, because at normal speed it looked nailed on. But ho hum, we don't get pens either.

It was harsh to book Osman, he wasn't even appealing for it, so I'm not sure how it can be seen as an attempt to con the ref. Whether it was a penalty is another matter. Personally I don't think Lovren impeded him, the ball was heading out of play anyway and he could have easily hurdled the challenge, so I wouldn't have given it, but we couldn't have really complained if it had been. The second one was nothing, McCarthy made a lot of it.

Think a couple of our shouts were better, for the first handball appeal Stones certainly had his arm out and should have been a penalty for me, but you rarely see them given for handball these days.

Looks like a foul, swims like a foul, quacks like a foul.

From where I was sat, I was directly in line with it, with Lovren facing me; it as a stupid challenge and he got a way with it. I haven't seen the TV replay but if Osman was already going down, it was because he saw Lovren launch himself from about the itchen bridge.

You know what they call it when you're already going down before a challenge?

Robbie Savage knows as much about football, as I know about being a millionaire. In other words Nowt.....

Agree. Thought Hansen showed him up big time on MOTD over penalty claims.

i take your point but then it would be fine to dive all over the place and let the referees make their own minds up without appealing?

Not sure it really matters at this point. We won, but on another day that tackle gives away a pen and I'd hope he doesn't do it again.

Each time I just saw Hansen criticise savage for flip flopping without elaborating on it not being a penalty. Was there any more to the disagreement?

I wouldn't have complained if the ref had given the Osman penalty to be honest but only if he had given one of our handball claims especially the Stones (I think) one where he had his hands/arms high up in front of him and outstretched behind him which was the one that blocked our cross/shot.
That first penalty would have made it 3-0 so Osman's would have been of lesser importance

On its own, Hansen challenging Savage just looked odd and out of context...the point he should have made was that Savage had changed his mind, proving how hard it was for refs who only see it once. I'm not even sure slo-mos improve the situation....sometimes they are deceptive. A struggle to get up can look like a hold.

The fact is that CBs give away penalties by the very nature of where they are in the action....Lovren was lucky, the first one especially would be given most of the time (though how far the ball was away from the attacker may have been one factor). Fonte is often seen clutching shirts and looking distinctly shifty. Its what CBs do.

I was a long way from the 1st penalty appeal and I breathed a sigh of relief at the time as it looked a stonewall pen from a distance.

If the penalty had been given then I think the pundits would of said how Osman won the penalty. The challenge was foolish and rash from Lovren and you could see Osman straighten his leg and brace for impact. Sadly for Osman, he straightened his leg a fraction too early and began to fall of his own accord before the tackle came in.

Does the attacking player have a responsibility to ride a challenge?
Dzeko won his penalty against Fonte the other day by throwing himself down and taking advantage of a clumsy challenge.
Does contact equal penalty? Football is a contact sport after all

When asked about the Jarvis incident I think Pochettino said he would have liked his player to go down and give the referee a decision to make. The trouble for football is the refs then end up being the focal point at the end of most games based on decisions that many people can't agree on

The Osman one. Clearly tripped looking at the replays.

Was going down before the contact though. Not saying it was a yellow card dive, but not a penalty.

A little case of luck levelling out. History will read Saints won this 2-0....good enough for me.

I wonder if you would be saying that if it had happened down the other end.
