Serious point, shouldn't it be an offence to lie to the media that you are close to signing another team's players?

I don't suppose they would get many journalists willing to testify, for fear of losing access, but it's pretty underhand isn't it?

It probably should be an offence, but then tapping up already is an offence and that happens all the time too. I'd still not be surprised if United had agreed a deal with Luke without permission.

Done all the time.

It is an offence to communicate to a player without permission. It happens all the time, but teams very, very rarely get 'done' for it.

Assuming they aren't actually talking to Shaw though, this isn't quite directly communicating with a player, though it's an obvious attempt to unsettle him. I'm sure this kind of thing does go on all the time, but should it?

It shouldn't but does. I think it happened with Chamberlain as well.

No it shouldn't, but it happens and usually not direct, i.e., via an agent or even a 'representative' (someone else who knows him.

The other thing that does definitely happen is clubs using the media to 'start' a story without any foundation.

Guessing the guy I know was right. The poster that said the deal had been agreed and Shaw was talking about personal terms with a guy he knows needs to report that guy.(if true)

I'm not naive enough to think that this is any way a special case, but considering how widespread it must be, it's sort of surprising that at least a token effort hasn't been made to stop it.

Interesting suggestion. Not sure it's likely but I'd like to hear from that poster again about this. There is of course a long way to go yet before we know he's definitely wrong, but you're right that his source must be behaving illegally.

Reed's comments informs the fans and press, but is also a warning to other clubs who may have thought we were desperate to sell. Hopefully, this should stop other teams sounding off as if they have a done deal...still reckon most of it is media driven though. Also gives a message to any player who might have felt unsettled....the ambition remains the same.

Les Reed's comments are pretty much exactly where I expected the club's position to be. I'm really glad he's come out and made his statement simply because rumours tend to gain credence as people talk about them, and then the fervour builds. Let's be clear - the basis of this actual thread is rumour. As long as we are aware of that, as we pass comment back and forth, then we are being realistic. Let's remember that the if's, but's and maybes are all hot air and that one need not be worried or concerned when one sees a new rumour. I know there are people out there who are.

I don't think his value is inflated. In the world where players like Neymar cost around 100 mil, Shaw for 30 is a bargain.

Although that world doesn't yet exist, as Neymar didn't even cost half of that.
(Though if you're including the hidden illegal add-ons, though, gets close to £70m or so. Basically a Luke Shaw in illegal payments.)

The obvious example to use would be surely be Gareth Bale. Both players games started from the LB position. Bale has gone on to be remarkable. At the moment, that's £85M.

I think some people posting were just saying "what if" not really worrying that players were off.
