Think everyone is being a little bit harsh in Mig. Keeping coming into a new team, with a very changing back 4. Trying to lean to play a different way with the ball at his feet, something he's obviously never had to do as much before. You can see he's really trying, when the ball comes back to him he tries to find a pass and if not one short, try and chip it wide to the full backs and only as a last resort go long. No doubt he'll improve and hopefully over the summer and pre-season he'll put the work in. I think with a full season behind Skrtel/Sakho he'll be a lot more confident. In Europe he'll get more protection from refs for crosses as well so might not be so bad there. If at the end of next season he's not improved then we can look to try and improve.
De Gea was just a boy coming over from Spain playing in a different country for the first time. Mignolet's 26 and had 3 years at Sunderland, so the circumstances are abit different. Mignolet isn't a bad keeper, but I just don't think he's a top level keeper, and with 50+ games for you guys next season having a top keeper in goal will make a difference in a lot of games. You could get Begovic for about 12 million, or Lloris for 20-25. They would be much better IMO
No goalkeeper, no matter how great they are with their feet, should be put in the position of sweeping so often as Mig at Norwich.
Oh the work around logic to try prove a point. Sad. he was playing in a new team, there is a bedding in time for a keeper and the defenders in front of him. It was a big move up for him and he's in a position where he could win the league, even the best get nervous and a couple of his mistakes have been just that. Especially the Norwich one. Same issue, when do you come when do you stay, De Gea had exactly the same problem in his first season at United. until a keeper and defenders have that intuition that forms from playing a year together it's better the following season, this is the way for young keepers, there will be mistakes. it seems the good stuff he does gets forgotten. De Gea "a boy" what a pathetic play on words to try prove a point.
You can't deny that Mig flaps at crosses and his distribution isn't particularly good! He is a good keeper but you need a great keeper and there are a few out there that won't cost a huge amount to bring in.
Fair enough Sisu everyone is entitled to there opinions, Mignolet may well improve. I just don't think he's quite up to playing for a now top 4 side, I never rated him that highly at Sunderland either. As far as the 'boy' comment goes, De Gea was 19 when we signed him, he was just a kid in my eyes. 21 is the day you become a man. That was a big ask for a lad so young to come in and take over from Van Der Sar, but I always supported him, even when he was getting stick from the press, as you could see how great a shot stopper he was. There is not a keeper in the world with reactions like De Gea, he just needed to work on the other side of the game, which he has, and is gradually becoming a complete keeper
So it's ok for De Gea to be a good shot stopper and then work on the other sides of his games (distribution & claiming crosses) but not ok for Mig? He's 26 but that's still pretty young for a keeper. He's got another 3-4 years until he hits his prime. As mentioned, De Gea might have been coming fro a different league, but Mig has come from a different style of play altogether. He was playing in a team where he never really had to se his feet, now it's very important. Maybe during training he's putting more effort into that area this season because it's his weakest area and it ha had a negative effect on hi aerial ability? Not many keeper go to a new team and are immediately very good in all aspects of their game. Reina was shaky when he first joined, then developed into one of the best. Don't get the "not up for playing in a top 4 side comment". Sorry to burst your bubble but he's been first choice keeper in a team that is currently top of the table with 3 games to go and is certain to finish in top 3. He's not the best keeper in the World, but he's been good enough to be in goal for us this season as the table shows.
Fair enough Biscan but if you win the league it won't be because of your ability to not concede goals, it will be because your attack has been outstanding. If you win it you will have the highest goals conceded per game to ever win the PL, you may also have the highest goals per game, if you can get to 103 in the next few games
Ah, the old "our attack I covering our defence argument". If we played like Chelsea and sat back and didn't plough 5 men forward and go for teams from the off and keep going at them, then we'd also have a much better defensive record. I'm not saying we'd have only conceded 20 goals or something, but Rodger's has clearly seen our best way to win games is to outscore teams given where our strength is. However, the tactics have often left our defence in dangerous situations and susceptible to the counter. That's not the Keepers fault, not even the defence at tmes, but often the midfield and forwards. Any if we win the league (#nojinx), it'll be because we have more points than anyone else #pedantic
We've conceded 4 more league goals than Utd and sit proudly at the top of the league, last seasons champions are welcome to the we conceded less than Liverpool trophy but we're aiming higher and are laughing our bollocks off at Utd. #blamervpandrooney
Actually think Migs reputation has gone down since he joined us. But the higher level and expectations take some getting used to and he has had a good if not great season. He'll improve over summer and through next season, certainly if he gets some actual competition in training.
We're hardly a team that plays a high-line and keeps possession in the attacking third TBH. Many of the goals conceded have been defensive mistakes.
If we win the league it'll be because we've been the best team in the league. End of. Don't care about all this 'But you've had no Champion's League... but you've got a weak squad... but you've conceded so many goals and have got easily the most watch the game from behind your hands defence... but you've done it with Cissokho actually starting some games... but you've had so many penalties wa wa wa wa waaaaaaaa'. It's football, if you want something bad enough you have to go out and earn it, win it. All these envious ****ers coming on here, alright freedom of speech exists and we respect their right to say what they want (in a reasonable manner), but if you're team's so great then go on, win the Prem. You've got a whole season starting from this August. #nojinx
Ofcourse if you win the league you will have been the best team over 38 games, there will be no arguments from me. Though you've done it by attacking teams and scoring goals, not by keeping clean sheets. Personally I'd say it's better to play that way
Not really, but its amazing how in less than one season Utd are in turmoil and managed by 4 ex-players with no managerial experience between them.
