Yet, you seem to be refusing to acknowledge that some may interpret that another way and those ignoring the other possible meaning of his statement are being naive themselves.

Well if he goes for £30m then he'd become the most expensive fullback in history and I believe the third most expensive defender in history, sure he has the potential to be one of if not the best in the world, but for an 18 year old at a relatively middling club that's a lot of money.

 

Exactly. And that's the point - in my view, that's the wrong interpretation of what he's saying. Therefore by going all Buddhist about it, the only people generating that feeling are the fans themselves due to their misinterpretation, not the club/board/player/manager.

He's in a no-lose - if Shaw stays, the sun shines out of his bottom. If he goes, he'll be able to cover it by saying that it was a decision not based on debt and the financial model, but by the club/player/manager in order to strengthen/because Shaw wanted to leave/because Shaw's mum fancies Ryan Giggs.......whatever the reason. Just not the "repayment of reported debt".

Yes that debt announcement was odd considering how small an issue it really is. It does feel like they're positioning themselves for more bad news, but nevertheless, they made a point of saying that players don't need to be sold to cover it, so maybe their pronouncement of more open communication should be taken at face value and it really doesn't mean anything more than that. I think it's basically too early to form any reasonable judgements about how trustworthy or ambitious this new board are, but I think it will be damaging if the first real impression they're able to give us is a negative one.

As you say, the players' feelings are the most important, but considering how vocal Krueger is about the importance of the fans, and of growing the fan base, it would be an issue if a section of those fans picked up on any wavering as a sign that the good times are over.

Personally, I would prefer that Shaw stays, I think I've been pretty clear about that. I could accept his sale, but only on the condition that the club has a progressive plan for that money and they are competent enough to carry it out. Ideally they would have replacements lined up before he goes, just as Spurs did with the Bale sale.
