Morning all, an hour of heavy rain last night, so foggy start to the day here.

Only one daughter left for me and not sure that she will bother. My speeches were dreadful for the others, but I did manage to get a few laughs. At our last wedding the bridegrooms father said that he would like to say a few words, but when it came to it he handed over his notes to his wife to read out.

Back to the patio extension now. I will have to go and buy some more sand as a heavy bag of it does not go very far. :(

Petrol price rose again yesterday, is now ÍSK247,2 and diesel stayed at the same price ÍSK236. These compare as GBP131.5 and GBP125.5.

Our wedding services are similar and I was the best man for my brother and had a speech worked out. When the bride and groom went to sign the church book she managed to get one of her friends to sign in my place and when the speeches were made this person again was promoted above me so my speech became improvised and a response to this behaviour. As I am quite good with words I was congratulated for a beautiful speech, only my mother saw it for what it was. My brother is now divorced and he can not blame me as I did not sign the book as the witness.

Possibly the worst FOTB speech I ever heard was at my cousin's wedding a couple of years ago. His father-in-law went on about how the bride was unable to have kids, and they couldn't adopt because she was on dialysis. She moved out within a year because "he deserved to be with someone who could give him a family". They'd been living together for more than a year before the wedding, so my cousin was used to the situation. According to my aunt and uncle, he was devastated when she moved out. I wonder if she would've moved out if her father had paid for the wedding, but my cousin did from winnings from a holiday in Vegas.

Another one of my cousins is gay and has been living with his partner for a few years - who assumes the FOTB role at a civil partnership ceremony?

I can relate to that - knowing your subject makes it so much easier, much more so than delivering anecdotes etc about the poor guy who asked you to be his best man. I've been asked six times and made a bit of an arse of myself each time - in my mind anyway, as no-one ever complained. The last time was actually only with 30 seconds warning - our neighbours, who had been living together for ten years, decided to tie the knot & did so in their back garden - a poolside ceremony. Only after the celebrant had finished did the guy realise that he hadn't organised a best man - so he stuck a beer in my hand and told everyone to be quiet as I was about to speak.....

My first 'official' public speech was work related - in similar circumstances. One of my work colleagues was due to deliver a speech to 200 businessmen at a Rotary Lunch on the subject of Training and Employment needs of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people - the bugger cried off as I was walking out the door to go to lunch & I wasn't quite quick enough to escape...

At my own wedding, I think everyone got the broad hint given out about no speeches - my best man was my seven year-old stepson. <laugh>

Funnily enough I tried to get some inspiration from the internet as I did not want to be too repetitive - having already given three speeches my side of the family would have recognised and buzzed for repetition :) I did not find anything helpful there at all and in fact many were cringeworthy.

    Have a good weekend all.

Re the wedding speeches: I am going to have to translate my dad's speech at my wedding into Spanish for the Mexican guests present. At least I am quick enough to edit it ! ;)

Afternoon all. I took my mother to see the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Festival Hall last night with the highlight being Rodrigo's Tribue D'aranjuez (I rely on you all to correct the spelling!). I'm not hugely into classical music but the guitarist, Milos, was utterly sublime. It's easily the best classical concert I have been to.

I've just come back from a tax lecture and I'm waiting for jerzeypie to return from his Explorer Scout fundraiser before going for lunch.

The things we do on the weekend!

I'm currently working on a teaching plan for my class centred around the Commonwealth Games - and I have 17 reports to do after that. Given that the average time allocated in our working agreement for completion of one report is an hour, I think I'm in trouble this weekend....

Finished off laying the new paving, dashed to the baker and bank, erected some more anti-deer fencing and have some planting to do. That can wait until the game is over.;)
