http://www.watfordfc.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10400~2379710,00.html Thoughts? Good we have this continuity? Promote from within for a Number 2 or bring in an 'old' head?
Thoughts - not much choice really - we were never going to attract a manager who would want funds to spend - famous names are usually a disappointment and any up and coming manager is not going to look at a club that loses its manager to a club like Cardiff. I have no idea whether SD will be any good but it makes no difference - if he does a half decent job he will sign a new contract then leave for more money next summer I am thoroughly fed up and depressed by this whole business and find it totally impossible to get excited about Watford in any shape or form for the moment.
Good for continuity, but does he have the man-management skills needed? I would bring someone else in who can over some of his current duties and give him support....not exactly ambitious, but with the money we don't have, is there much really much else we can do? Anyway, glad it is not Keene...
Lets go!!! Positives: Continuity - players will know him and be secure around him, also know what he has got around him to play with money wise Transfers - Will have worked with Malky and know who would be good for the squad Watford man - been around for years. Negatives: Green - very green and new to the job, wasn't ready when Malky took over so why is he now? Not at all proven - but has got the opportunity to prove himself! I'm sure there are more - I would have liked someone more experienced as we're not an easy club to manage but he will have my and I expect all our support!
Old Bob the kit man must be well pleased, three more years and he gets the managers job at this rate! Not sure how I feel about it, better someone who knows the club and the academy, stops MM from a quick poach, Dyche is scary enough to stop the young-uns talking to Cardiff.... must be a good thing...
All for it, like everyone has said that key word continuity! Now bring it on, let's see what he has to say for himself
Totally agree with the decision to promote within SD knows the set up and hopefully we can get a decent no2 to work along side him. Would love to see Nigel Gubbs return to the Vic . At least it's been sorted now so they can get down to work and start building a team over the summer. Good decision !
Its not the end of the world. As others have said a lot of the desicions made last season and before would have been his or been made with him input. It is nice to see the continuity and people getting a fair shot at it. However the issue now is who will be number 2? I dont think we have a ready made assistant with out upsetting the balance too much elsewhere. However i wish him the very best of luck and i will be cheering his name!!
At worst it's a solid appointment, even if it was the cheap option. How much better than "solid" it is depends entirely on how the backroom staff shapes up in the coming weeks.
I guess is one hope is now Dyche is manager, the remaining staff won't want to go either. Dyche said himself he wasn't really ready but maybe getting thrown in the deep end will help, and if he can carry on trying to play the way Malky did, then good stuff! He is obviously the cheap option - and be interesting to see how much Cardiff paid for Malky, and how that is going to be reinvested!
I've been away for a while so have spent some time catching up with all the goings on. I liked your article Leonardo and thought you articulated the facts very well indeed. Normally of positive disposition, I am struggling with the apparent politics at the Vic and have to admit to the same sentiment as Leonardo's last sentence. I don't know of the Dyche boy but can only hope he has the whwerewithall to keep us in the C'ship. I was hoping for Chris Hughton as that would get the fans in but as the decision has been made so be it. Onwards & upwards then or in our case, down, shift sideways and scuttle around ....... Regards to all fellow sufferers!
Poor old Leonardo! And you said I was miserable! But you will bounce back!. A rapid appointment--good. Looks like GT was involved and that Mr B took advice--good. Continuity and knowledge of our systems and staff--good. Leadership skills--proven. Most other attributes of a manager--unproven. Dress sense--poor. Go on Sean, give Leonardo reason to be happy!
Best of luck to him - In the end not surprised the board went for this option. He needs a good assistant with experience, I can not see Gibbs leaving Reading though.
We can do nothing other than give him our support. I have to confess to knowing little about his managership style...more flexible than his playing style I hope...but, like all managers these days, people will either be singing his praises in 6 months' time or claiming they said it was an inexplicable appointment at the time. I'm all for continuity, but the manager's job is neither simple nor easy and he will have to learn fast.
Well done Mr Bassini! I think this is very clever, not only do we get the continuity, another can be groomed for the time Sean Dyche leaves - as surely he will, but it will make Cardiff think before they come after him as it will no doubt lead to another compensatory payment. The other thing is that whatever tranfers were in the pipeline may not now collapse, as a new chap to the club will have seen things completly differently, as to have got to a stage where MMwas watching SD would have been there on his shoulder so target will know who he is. Perhaps with an open door to GT policy things could be looking quite bright.
I think it is the right move. Congratulations Dyche. Well done to the board for sorting out Malky's replacement so soon. Remains to be seen who will be his No.2 though. Bearing in mind our squad is being made up more and more by academy youngsters, Sean Dyche, who began his coaching career as youth team coach, is the logical choice. He has been working with the break-through kids for the past 4 years, so should know Harefield (the academy not the town. Although I am sure he knows parts of the town fairly well as well) very well. Very much looking forward to the next season now.
I don't want to play down how good Hughton did at Newcastle, but I think his ability is slightly exaggerated. He did exactly what was expected at Newcastle, and deserves huge credit for it given the off-field circus. But while their romp to the Championship title was devastating, Newcastle had indisputedly the best squad in the division. Once in the Premier League, he took them to what I would consider their natural place. Opinions of him are skewed, partly because his dismissal was a shocking decision, partly because he is being judged as a person and/or manager against the likes of Mike Ashley, Dennis Wise, Derek Llambiass, Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear and Alan Shearer. Back onto Watford. With a decent number two (or extra coach, if Kerslake is promoted), there's no reason to think that Dyche can't steady the ship. If Cowie goes for a few million it'll be a huge blow, but not necessarily a fatal one. But for Dyche to be able to make a go of this, he must have complete autonomy over the hiring (and if necessary firing) of backroom staff. And if a player is sold, he must be able to buy a like-for-like replacement in this window on comparable wages, albeit on a fraction of the transfer fee.
I was just going to say similar to NNW with regards to Hughton. I think he overachieved a little in the Premiership, but what he did in the Championship was what was to be expected. I do think Dyche is a good appointment. he knows the youngsters coming through, and it might make some of the players think again if someone (Malky) comes in for them. If they like Sean and respect him, they migjht want to give him that opportunity to see where he can take this squad! The last 3 appointments have been promoting younger managers and think all 3 worked out pretty well (to start with)
Overall I think this is as good a appointment as we are going to get. There is a good degree of continuity at the club, he's a Watford man through and through, and I think that after two years as No.2 to Mackay he is ready to take the step forward. I ruled Dyche out on the basis that he would join Cardiff. No chance of anyone allowed to get a big ego in the dressing room with dychey there! With some of the candidates that were being touted Bassini could have done a lot worse.
