For those who did not hear it, he was interviewed by another ex Charlton legend Danny Murphy.

    Main points:

    1. He said he had to be careful what he said about the new owners for legal reasons (i.e he hasn't had his pay off yet)

    2. The league position was false. We were in a Cup run which affected us. We had 4 games in hand, had we won one of those, we would have been out of the Bottom 3). Asked about the Sheff Utd debacle, "Charlton don't do cup runs"

    3. He had big concerns about the quality of players that RD brought in. He didn't think they were good enough. Riga seems to agree with him.

    4. He felt the press conference where Murray put his arm around him and said "of course he is our manager" was "PR"

    5. He wished he had asked RD at the outset what his long term intentions were.

    6. Murphy worryingly said "you played for Charlton 3 times and will manage them 3 times".

    7. Finally, that Powell will be writing to all the Charlton fans who wrote to him. I hope that includes me. I e mailed to say he should have gone three months earlier.

I thought I could hear from my office in the city, the mass unzipping of trouser flies from south of the river.

Is this a late April Fool <whistle>

Powell left the club on its arse mate.

Its time for the old heart string puller to move on to his natural level in League Two (or lower)

I was a big Powell fan, still am, but it was time for him to go, he liked the club too much and staying with it did more damage in my opinion, he should have just quit when Kermit was sold surely against his wishes, fair play for him to sticking with it, But I bet 90% of us here, we love the club and if we got the job we'd probs resign as soon as things were getting bad as we'd fear damaging the club too much.

quote the rest of the interview... "reward for finishing 9th was a £2m slash in wage budget".

lets not go over this, you have your opinion. i have mine.

Listen to the interview if you can, Ted. The worrying thing for me is that Powell actually thinks he could come back, like the King from across the water, to manage us one day. There were repeated references by him to his "bond with the fans" and how the club was "in his blood".

Says Powell. The guy is a PR master. Always sings a tune that guarantees sympathy.

Good to have some self belief, and I will never forget the League One winning season, but he was a beaten man and had to go, the self belief may have been justified, but I couldn't see where the next win would come from under him, I wish him all the best and would buy him a drink if I saw him, just like I would Parky... and then after that drink I'd smash the pint glass on Dowie/Pardew/Murray's head

well you'd sort of notice if £2m wasnt there to be spent or not. could you overlook that if you were trying to spend it?

adds up though with last summers departures.

He said his budget was cut by £2m, but if so why buy a keeper we didn't need (Button)
The whole interview smacked of shifting the blame
He didn't even answer the soft question about our league form properly.

I think with the players who were let go at the end of their contracts last seaon and the lack of incoming players at the beginning of this season, I am quite happy to believe this statement and not put it down as just PR

Slater & Jiminez wanted to sell the club by then. It doesn't excuse leaving us bottom, & with collective red arse cheeks after Sheff Utd.

with the second (or third) lowest budget in the champ last year, to then be cut by 2m is no surprise to see us bottom.

As Powell explained, we went bottom because we were playing in the cup and those around us won.

At least try and give a balanced post even if you do have an irrational hatred for the man.
