A former England youth defender once dubbed ‘the next John Terry’ is on trial at Manchester United.
Sunderland centre half Louis Laing has been told he will be released from the club at the end of the season.
And The Journal has reported that the 21-year-old will train with United this week as they look to bolster the levels beneath their first-team.

    Odd as **** this.

Long vaunted, never given a chance, rated enough that United want a look, what gives?

Heard he's a wonderful footballer for a CB. Why have we released him? Especially before our fate has been decided. What's going on?

Congertons work apparently, not the only one getting released either, Laidler, Egan, Knott and Gorrin all leaving. All showed promise but none given a chance.

The likes of Agnew, Smith and Ethan Robson moving up to the development squad now to replace them.

This is all a bit odd to me, Knott is supposedly immensely talented and Gorrin is very well rated, I've heard much talk of Egan as well.

Unless this is linked to the 'culture' of the club, as this seems like we are culling the 'names' of the youth set up, are the problems that deep rooted?

When you think, every 'next big thing' we have disappears, the one's that have made it were rarely the most tipped as youth players.

Jack shone through on loan, as did Hendo.

Completely baffled, Knott is excelling at Port Vale, same with Egan at Southend. Only league one and two clubs but nevertheless to release them when we may very well be in the championship next year seems very odd.

Worth noting that a young lad who has been offered another year is Thomas McCanamee, who is the son of ged the guy in charge. He plays CB the same as Egan and Laing...something wrong there like.

Wtf. They're our best youth product. Something is very wrong in the state of Denmark if this is being allowed to happen. How Congerton can decide this so early doors is beyond me - Not too many Chelsea youth players make it through the ranks, i hope the same doesn't apply here.

It makes a mockery of the academy if these guys go for nowt as well.

Looks if ManU are just covering the lose of Vidic and Ferdinand as they will be left with Evans and Smalling as first choice so it might only be a look see for Laing. I cant't fathom why we are letting him go as he is a proven international at junior level and we will be left with two old/ageing CBs and maybe Vergini as cover.

Looking at it from Laing's view thoug, maybe he did not fancy the contract that was offered and is now a free agent if the reports about Blackburn and ManU are accurate.

Seems to be looking that way.

Apart from Henderson, the average Colback, and the other fella (name i can't remember, sold for 3m), what else has the academy produced?

Waghorn and Leadbitter the only other meaningful two we have produced, Meyler and McClean don't really count I guess as we brought them over and then helped develop them.

Looking at their ages I think it would mean if we stayed up we have to register Egan and Knott in the 25 man squad? Might have something to do with it as they are 21 and will be 22 next year.

i have high hopes for Egan and Knott, especially Egan.

Didnt Gus think about recalling Knott at one point this season too?

I just can't make myself get so uptight as some on here about a player I've never seen play...

Could be a number of reasons we're letting him go - maybe he wanted a bigger contract than we felt he was worth when he found out about the interest from Utd, or maybe the management decided Egan was the better of the two and we've no capacity to blood two young CDs this season so one had to go... Gonna trust the club's judgement here until he's an England regular!
