Van Gaal is no fool. Unless he is assured that he has enough funds and TIME to change things around then he's more likely to refuse any offer United might make. But there will always be somebody who is prepared to take the risk. As for United being an elite club just forget it. Elite clubs are not stymied by their debts and they do not get dazzled by giant turnover figures. It will be interesting to see how robust that turnover is as United go through a lean period. However the debt will still need to be serviced thereby further reducing the clubs ability to buy their way out of problems.

United fans were adamant that they could cope with the debt and still play at the big table. Well that boast is now wide open to be reviewed. The debt is still there and the teaam has failed both domestically and in Europe - the gap to that top table is growing daily. I'm still waiting for this statement from United's owners that they are prepared to spend in the region of £100-150 million this Summer.

As for Van Gaal. There's a reason why managers take on the national manager role - generally it is because they can no longer meet the demands of managing a club any more. After the stresses of managing Holland in the World Cup will he really want to captain a sinking ship like United? I think there's a great deal of doubt. So my fingers remain firmly uncrossed when I consider United and its fate - which I do less and less and less!

    Interesting.

So with van gaal already having been Holland boss and then returning to club football to turn bayern around and set the foundations of their current rise. He also took an unfancied Dutch team to the title over there.

Hes also famed for working with what he has and hes not really spent big at all. His strength is in working with what he has and using/improving the clubs youth acadamy.

So no hes no fool. Infact hes quite the opposite and if you buy into his philosophy you get success. Time after time the same story with him. It usually ends up sour but even that doesnt stop what he sets in motion.

Hmmmm I think van gaal's influence at bayern is just a little bit over stated given bayern use technical director role and how it ended for him!

So Dutch league, credit to him but mcclaten and twente.

I think uir is optimistic which is fair enough but I still question 3 things

    1. No modern technical structure to take things on.. City have one but we don't either

    2. His age

    3. The fact is his best success is actually a while ago and it ended badly with bayern

Van Gaal as the safe pair of hands is a sensible choice IMO given their small pool of candidates. He's the best that they can attract at this moment in time.

Compare that to the safe pair of hands we employed after Rafa. My God, that still makes me sick ...

Why sack Moyes and go give another manager "time"
Wasn't that what Moyes was supposed to have, it's a joke if United "promise" VG time. It's results based, bottom line, time=success at all major clubs

probably meant in you will get time as long as you meet the minimum requirement expected of this club. ie cl football.

it can probably be made into a mathematical equation<laugh>

Had Moyes beat Liverpool and City at OT with good performances from the manc team in just those two games, I think he'd still be in the job, at least a little longer.

It may only be after the weekend that non-qualification for the CL has become mathematically certain, but in reality, the proverbial blind man on a galloping horse could see long ago that qualification wasn't happening. Presumably Dave knew that it was a minimum requirement of his job so he'll have been expecting the chop for weeks.
He has looked resigned to it at times.

Agree, he knew the chop was coming, he just wasn't happy it was leaked, can't really blame the club for that as they always prefer that kind of thing not to be leaked surely.

It didn't guarantee him the chop, it merely meant that should they choose to terminate his contract, then he'd only be entitled to a 12 month payoff, as opposed to the contract having to be paid up in full.
