Ex-Wales star Leighton James suffers suspected stroke

Former Wales, Burnley and Swansea winger Leighton James has suffered a suspected mild stroke.

Swansea confirmed the 61-year-old's illness and that he has had hospital treatment.

James, who made his name at Burnley, is a football pundit for BBC Wales.

During a 19-year career, he also played for Derby County, Queens Park Rangers, Sunderland, Bury and Newport County. James' playing career ended in 1989 at Burnley.

He made 54 Wales appearances, scoring 10 goals.

After his playing career James went on to manage a number of non-league clubs in England and Wales, the most high profile being Accrington Stanley in 1997-1998.

In Wales he has managed Llanelli, Aberaman and Haverfordwest County and following the end of his playing days, James also worked as a lollipop man.

As a tiddly young urchin kicking the proverbial clump of knotted rags around the streets with Topper, Ginger and Strangely Brown, I was oft to go by the star name of 'Leighton Early' as homage to our Welsh Wizard.

 

One of the great entertainers. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery Leighton.

James had left us by then, you are thinking of Tony Currie.

 

Feck! The brain HAS gone. Of course it was Currie.

 

And my memory tells me it was the Ref getting in the way of our (Gary Waddock's I think -- ?) clearance near the edge of our penalty area, that put us in the dangerous situation in the first place. To give them a penalty seemd very harsh, and then he mysteriously ruled out what looked like a great Micklewhite (?) equaliser.

 

I seem to remember Leighton scoring a cracker against Liverpool in a surprise 2-0 win that season...
