Would love to see it make a return one day. I have read there is some sort of get together late in May to reminisce over old stories etc.

Used to run out after tea every Sat to get the Sports Mail for my Dad to check his pools. When I moved South in 1979 my Mum used to send me the SM every week. Hope it comes back.

Sadly, everything is super speedy now. I doubt they would they be able to sell enough to recover the costs of producing it.

I used to love the green mail, the only time I didn't was when I was a paper boy and had to go out 3 times on a Saturday, morning and evening HDM and then again for the green mail.

I emailed the HDM sports editor a few years ago and asked the question of will the sports mail make a return as its missed by many people , the reply I received is that it wont because of the internet and all the info is available online now. My argument is that all the info in the HDM is available online so why not stop printing that as well ??

Funnilly enough down here in Pompey the Football Mail was closed down about 3 years ago. Since the club was taken over by the Supporters Trust it has reappeared again.

Slave labour it was too, heavy bags and a pittance in pay, loved every minute of it.

Your right there, but Christmas was good, getting quite a bit of money from regular customers.

Bluddy nuisance at times when I was a paperboy, use to have to wait until 6pm for them to arrive then deliver about 20 and in summer when there was only cricket there was nothing worth buying it for.

I used to boldly knock on the doors and say, "Merry Christmas I'm your paper boy." An old lady only gave me an apple but I was well mannered and said thanks. I wonder if she's still around, she'd be about 130.

I loved being a paper lad John except for the first morning when I delivered all the papers in the wrong street, broadsheets then, so had to go knocking on people's doors at 6:30am to get the papers back when I eventually put them in the right doors. But there were many magazines in those days as well, TV Times/Radio Times/Women's Own/Women's Weekly and many more that weighed a ton. I did Mon - Sat morning and night 12/6d a week and an extra 6d for collecting the money on a Saturday morning. Then later on I added a Sunday round getting £1 for about 6hrs, loved it and after a while I could whip round as I knew which house wanted which paper. Load of fun then as well as the Christine Keeler story broke, certainly took a lot longer to deliver papers during that time than normal. :)

I did Sundays from when I was 15. I also delivered a whole Sunday round into the wrong street. I got 10/- for dailies and £1 for Sundays.

Reading the papers was like having an encyclopedia on your round - you knew more than the other kids at school, about what was in the news (that morning).

i used to have to deliver H&E magazine and another nudist magazine Face2Face i think ??? down Coltman , he used to get it a week late hahahaa -

the only other perk i had was destroying the paper of anyone stupid enough to order a broadsheet and own one of those tiny old letterboxes
and fighting the dog with a paper behind the door - happy days !!!
