Problem is, 2 or 3 players in would get us to a squad that would be suitable for the season we've had now. Make no bones about it, our squad at the moment is just about ok for Prem & the 2 cups that don't overlap. We've said all season we need more quality depth just for this season, so throw in another competition and we're going to need another 2/3 players that can be rotated in that as well. I reckon if we keep Borini/Suo and Ilori is able to step up, we still need at least 4 players to help cement top 4 and challenge for the title again, while also compete reasonably well in Europe (be it CL or EL if we come 3rd in the group). I don't want a scatter gun approach that Spurs did and just buy a load of players all the same standard to fight with current players for positions. They need to be improvements on the squad players we have (Johnson/Flanagan/Lucas/Allen for example) which will allow those to become squad players rather than 1st choice.
I think we'll sign four or five but only two or three will be for now. FSG and Brod have insisted on buying for the future (Ilori, Alberto, etc) and I see no reason for that to change.
Do you think that will include replacing players that will leave? Aspas, Assaidi, Agger/Kelly/Lucas/Johnson? Think those first 2 will go and wouldn't surprise me if the others did as well. If Agger/Lucas were to go then I'd hope we replace them as well as bring in extra bodies.
Nonsense really. Spend big on what exactly? Loads of cheap players to bolster the squad or on a few stars to increase pedigree. Personally you need to spend like City/Chelsea combined this summer or as someone stated, by February your players will be shattered.
Do we need to spend like City/Chelsea? Everyone thought we had to spend like them in order to get back into top 4 ... Rodgers and co are ripping up the so called blueprint for modern day football. I don't dispute the fact that we will need to spend to boost our squad to cope with additional fixtures but we don't need to spend on the same level as Chelsea/City.
Last time I heard about a warchest was in 09 and suddenly the rug got pulled out. Would rather us target the players we have been of late but with CL we can actually attain them.
Not really as our squads massive which is the point I am making. Yours isnt and therefore needs additions in basically every position if you plan on competing on multiple fronts. So spending big depends on whether its quality or quantity.
Massively ****e! If it is so massive why is the talk of you lot spending a 100 mil and revamping the squad? Might be big but you need a fair few new players, not to mention some old guard who saw you win CL, multiple league titles, multiple CL finals etc, making way this summer.
"It will cost what it costs when we decide who the manager wants to buy". What's he smoking? . That's the poorest constructed statement I've heard from Ayre yet.
yeh about 8 to get out of your CL group. Rodgers has never competed in the Champions League or against opposition of that quality. Could you see yourselves digging deep against a Real, Atletico, Barcelona or Bayern? Honestly? You would try and attack and get obliterated as these teams dream of playing a club like Liverpool and the way they play.
Because the manager was completely **** so he needed a fortune. ****e yet dominated the league for 4 years prior to this season.
I think our squad is bigger than you think. We have several out on loan so we don't actually lack the numbers and our first team is fairly good but we do lack quality in depth. Two or three quality signing would definitely be a better approach for us subject to outgoings.
Moyes was in the same boat was he not and still got out of the group with the likes of Cleverly, Smalling, Jones, Young, etc? You named 4 of the top teams in the world but there is nothing that says you will get them though, all down to luck. If we can go toe to toe with Chelsea, City, Arsenal you don't expect us to try with those teams? Not saying we would win but that is a bit clairvoyant. Atletico is just the Spanish word for Chelsea but with a really good striker to boot.
But not as many as you need to even start to repair that poor quality, ageing squad that you have. Plus, we know that we actually do have money to spend whereas your owners have made no public declaration that they are even prepared to forgo income and debt repayment to assist you. What are the latest estimates £150 - 200 million I hear. Now that's an awful lot of fixing!
