Even more congratulations that we achieved Champions League in such a year, with it looking to be a very high figure required to qualify for the champions league, as the past 5 seasons show:

2008/09 - Just 64 points to achieve Champions league.
    1. Man Utd - 90 points
    2. Liverpool - 86 points
    3. Chelsea - 83 points
    4. Arsenal - 72 points
    5. Everton - 63 points

2009/10 - 68 points to achieve Champions League.
    1. Chelsea - 86 points
    2. Man Utd - 85 points
    3. Arsenal - 75 points
    4. Tottenham - 70 points
    5. Man City - 67 points

2010/11 - Just 63 points to achieve Champions League.
    1. Man Utd - 80 points
    2. Chelsea - 71 points
    3. Man City - 71 points
    4. Arsenal - 68 points
    5. Tottenham - 62 points

2011/12 - 66 points to achieve Champions League (Chelsea qualified by winning, in place of Tottenham).
    1. Man City - 89 points
    2. Man Utd - 89 points
    3. Arsenal - 70 points
    4. Tottenham - 69 points
    5. Newcastle - 65 points

2012/13 - 73 points to achieve Champions League.
    1. Man Utd - 89 points
    2. Man City - 78 points
    3. Chelsea - 75 points
    4. Arsenal - 73 points
    5. Tottenham 72 points.

And now the table as it stands, with 3 games remaining (4 for City):
    1. Liverpool - 80 points
    2. Chelsea - 75 points
    3. Man City - 74 points
    4. Arsenal - 70 points
    5. Everton - 69 points

So, with recent years requiring 64, 68, 63, 66 and 73 points to qualify for the Champions League, it proves this season is one of the hardest on record and bitter rivals claiming its been easy or the weakest season in a long time is in fact not true!

You an idiot??? The whole point, is if you have more points that the team in 5th, you qualify for the Champions League.
Not taking into account Liverpool and Chelsea winning but not in the top 4.

Sorry but the logic is wrong here. In a truly competitive league then the points tally required for the top 4 slots would be the lowest as more sides would have capability to take points of the top sides.

I blame stonewall penalties, no Europe, the bib theory, Suarez, and FFP. And Gerrard for smacking the DJ <grr>

Where do the other 'missing points' go then brains?

The measure of what it took to get 4th in any given season is the points tally of the team in 4th ffs!

is he not saying that its harder to have got a top 4 position than previous years have shown? didn't think he mentioned about it being competitive but harder to achieve than it has been

By your logic then, lets look at the 2008/09 season when you were 5th. Arsenal could have had 10 less points and still qualified for the Champions league. Those 'missing points' if taken away from Arsenal, don't magically go to Everton. The amount of points you earned is what you earned, Arsenal just got 10 extra ones which meant nothing for them, they got 4th still.

2008/09 - Just 64 points to achieve Champions league.
    1. Man Utd - 90 points
    2. Liverpool - 86 points
    3. Chelsea - 83 points
    4. Arsenal - 72 points
    5. Everton - 63 points

This is my point. It is harder to achieve top 4 this season, a possible record high in fact. We looked at trying to achieve 2 points a game at the start of the season, what if at the end, that would only get you 5th in the league? It makes it a greater achievement, that we have as many points as we do.

You can tell this year was the hardest because if you look back at the media coverage their "top of the table" graphics would consistently go all the way down to 7th

How many times did that happen in previous seasons?

I just want to say how amazing it is to be guaranteed a top 3 finish and automatic CL qualification.

What a great achievement! Absolutely buzzing.

People seem to be confused with my logic.

2008/09 - Arsenal only needed 64 points to beat Everton to the Champions League
2009/10 - Tottenham only needed 68 points to beat Man City to the Champions League
2010/11 - Arsenal only needed 63 points to beat Tottenham to the Champions League
2011/12 - Tottenham only needed 66 points to beat Newcastle to the Champions League (also Chelsea not to win the thing)
2012/13 - Arsenal only needed 73 points to beat Tottenham to the Champions League (This one proves my logic, as its exactly what Arsenal got.
