Back in the mid-seventies, I think it was, and it was oddly enough against Liverpool. To be honest I couldn't see a fat lot from the Leazes End that day.

League cup final against Man City. Journey home was horrible.

None of the journeys home from games we've lost are particularly good. And lets face it we've had more than our share already this year. The coaches are rather quiet on the way home.

You were lucky, mate. I saw it in real life, and felt myself the most fortunate lad in the world beforehand (people were ready to murder each other for tickets). A definite watershed in my life. I realised then how dangerous it is building your hopes up about anything. Life has an awful habit of kicking our backsides if we display presumption.

Came home by train and it broke down which didn't help. On the plus side I got a cuddle off Brendan Foster.

1998 FA Cup final was the first big match I had seen live (was actually at Wembley) that we had lost. That was a gutting day. Par for the course now <laugh>

The queue for the train was miles long that night and bodies were laying all over the place in the carriages on the train down. BR relaxed some of the rules that night/morning. Not the most comfortable of trips but I was pleased to be there.

What I remember, apart from just wanting to disappear into a hole in the ground after the game, was some Asian feller, who put forth the proposition that Liverpool deserved to win because Brian Hall had a degree. (Even the Mackems couldn't come up with that one) Oh, and the robbing Scouse bastards also nicked my scarf and hat. After that, I hated them. However, Hillsborough changed my point of view.

Being (much) younger than most of you lot (AB is probably old enough to be my ancestor) the first big game I can remember us losing was the UEFA cup match against Marseille, when a certain Mr Drogba scored a couple. Whatever happened to him, eh?

My wife and I won an all expenses paid trip, including chauffeur driven car, hotel, entertainment and seats for the 1999 Cup Final against Man.Un . What was a brilliant once in a lifetime trip turned into a nightmare for us.

A nice little win, pity it was spoilt by the game.

I'm guessing the first heavy defeat you saw on Tyneside was when the Vikings first invaded.

We got thumped 4-1 by Liverpool at our place in 1998. It was my first game too.
