Moyes, Pardew, Pulis (can't believe his name is even being mentioned), Allardyce, Lambert etc are all cut from the same cloth. All very similar, all love a cliche, all love an old school 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1. Each can talk a good game, they just can't get their teams to produce one (on a regular basis).

All look to stop the opposition first instead of imposing their game from the off. Pardew may say he likes front foot, attacking football but the cold hard facts are that his teams rarely produce this. Even most of our wins this season have come from shutting up shop and playing on the counter, Chelsea (h), Man Utd (a), Spurs (a) all spring to mind. Even Fulham and Palace at home we only really threw the kitchen sink in the last twenty minutes.

Games where we've imposed ourselves best are Palace (a), West ham (a) and Villa (a). Shock horror, all managed by "Pardew Equivilants". Good performances by us, I'm not denying that. Just all against teams where their manager look to nullify the opposition as a priority instead of attacking teams from the off.

When we come up against a Swansea, Southampton, Everton, even Stoke (a), all teams who look to impress their style upon the opposition we've fallen to bits. It's time for a manager who'll let us of the leish from the off. It might not work, but i'd much rather a Rosler or a Eddie Howe, someone with new ideas rather than a manager all about containment first and foremost.

I'd prefer a young, up and coming manager but even a Hoddle would do. Yes he's been out the game a while, but he's inventive with this tactics (played 3-5-2 with England very successfully) and has a known football philosophy and a very attractive one at that.

It's pretty much a "no" from me on any manager that has previously managed in the premieir league for a few years and has finished mid table playing run of the mill, 4-4-2, workman-like football. I want to see a Newcastle team that enjoys having the ball so much that they work their nuts off just to win the bloody thing back. Even in our hot streak in November we were at our best when the opposition had the ball and that's not the sort of football I want to see us play anymore.

Mate Hoddle has been out of it for too long and didn't exactly do a great job when he was employed imo. He would very quickly become another yes man - probably not as spineless as Pards but would get there eventually.

I would love to see Rosler here though.

Football has become so ridiculous now I genuinely can't be bothered to care any more.

Ten managers have now been booted out of the Premier League during this season. TEN! That's bearing in mind that FOUR of the remaining 'survivors' were only appointed ready for the start of this season.

As much as I'm frustrated with Pardew, I hate the whole business of kicking managers out so frequently and so easily. You need time to build and develop the team and the wider club infrastructure to have any hope of long term success. Constantly recycling managers will not achieve that.

Yet I still feel Pardew should now go. So I have a personal dilemma. Stick with Pardew and his tripe? Or go against my personal beliefs and values (of giving people a chance and supporting them) and call for him to get the sack?

The latter is very tempting. Especially as it is so commonplace now to get a replacement at the click of your fingers. But all joking aside, the 'modern game' values are killing this sport. So much so I can hardly be bothered any more.

Gone are the days where a truly great manager can genuinely make the difference between a club fighting relegation and competing for titles. It's now just all about the owners and how much they invest. If they don't like the current 'great manager' they just a new one in for a few months before they bored again. That's not sport.

Hoddle is great shout but he likes things to be done his way and would get a nose bleed this far north. He played a modern style of football back in 1998! Had England playing the best and most intelligent football of any England manager. He was disgracefully treated by the FA has beens. Also has kept his hand in with his soccer schools and still has a great deal to offer. However I don't think he can be all that interested in management. He must have had loads of offers with his talent and hasn't bitten at any of them.

He'd be the ideal Director of Football in my opinion. I think maybe a young coach like Howe would love to have that above him. That undoubted knowledge of the game. Plus he is known continent and worldwide, he'd get deals "over the line". Of course though, that is thinking like an ambitious club. Much more likely is a Di Matteo type, supported by Ray Wilkins or one of his other favoured Chelsea legends <laugh>

Well said. Football is all about instant success and too many managers are being judged before they have had time to show what they can do. It takes years to build up a system at a club, and managers used to be given years. Now its months and sometimes even weeks. A lot of it is down to fans as well as owners though, with fans of some clubs thinking they have a divine right to be in a certain position in the league. It doesn't work that way.

The hire and fire mentality is all part of the modern culture of football. I was kind of hoping it would be like:

You know, die out when people realised that instant stuff is never quite as good because corners get cut (bar TJPF who probably loves SMASH)

That's the additional problem. It's a viscous circle. Clubs are more inclined to sack, so fans are more inclined to demand it. So it gets worse. Owners and fans alike want instant success - and often it's simply not at a realistic level for their club. And never will be without the stability of actually building a long term structure.

I'd much prefer the approach MA has gone for in terms of giving a manager a long term contract to enable 'stability'. The problem comes when 3 1/2 years in to that 8 year contract and we appear to be going backwards. I can't see the building blocks of any long term development being put in place. So when is it the right time to genuinely call for a manager to go? I wouldn't want Pardew being replaced by somebody on a short term contract, as you only get a short term outlook.

There isn't a right answer to that conundrum. The problem lies in the culture of football now as much as the length of contracts. All a long contract does is ensure a decent pay off rather than job security. Every appointment is a short term appointment now.

With respect to the first point, I agree that any manager needs a fair chance to build the team and then be judged by what he's built. Pardew has had that chance. Whether or not he is wholly to blame, I think it is clear that we are not a work in progress (except perhaps a sewage treatment plant).

With respect to the second, Roberto Martinez anyone ?

Honestly, its too early to tell. David Moyes got Everton into the top four and then fell back. Pardew got us to fifth, Laudrup won Swansea the League Cup. I don't think Martinez will prove to be a flash in the pan, but he hasn't had time to properly build his structure at the club yet. It will be interesting to see how he does next season without his loan players when he has to rely on signing players the club can afford, or doing just as well in the loan market for a second season. I think he will be ok, but he hasn't proved it yet. Judging after one season of success is just the other side of the coin as judging after one season of struggling, and is a mistake lots of clubs have fallen into by appointing a manager who looked great for a season but then did nothing afterwards (a bit like Lambert at Villa).

Agree with this bit though. There is no evidence of anything solid being built. Every season we look more and more like a house of cards that falls aprt as soon as anything goes wrong. That shows a lack of good foundation in what Pardew is building. If we need to start again (which we do) then let's change the builder!

Whoever does come in will be a yes man. There is nothing else that anyone can be. A manager who doesn't do what his boss wants him to do is an unemployed manager. The sad fact is that whoever comes in to replace Pardew will work according to the limits that Ashley tells them to work under. They wont be able to spend money unless he agrees, and they wont be able to stop him agreeing sales when he thinks it is financially beneficial. They wont openly criticise the Ashley regime or they will find themselves sacked. They will be yes men cos they need to be to be manager here.

Add to that that Martinez took Swansea from League 1 to the Premiership on a transfer budget of what he could find between the cushions of the club sofa. I think he is the one that got away as far as we're concerned (before Everton, we would probably have looked a like a big club to him)_

    Me>Pardew

I don't think being better than Pardew should be our barometer for selecting the next sacrificial lamb. I think we should aim ridiculously high and be hugely underwhelmed.

No more anti football for me. I want a manager who is like a bold lothario. One who thinks about what he'd like to do to the snatch, rather than what the snatch might do to him.
