He died aged 73 following a long illness. Condolences go out to his family. He retired from the BBC in 1997, same year as Peter O'Sullevan. I grew up listening to both as commentators on the BBC. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/horse-racing/27103241
Very sad to read this, he was a true professional broadcaster and I also grew up listening to Julian Wilson and Peter O'Sullevan. His race commentaries were always exciting and his summarising very eloquent. A very sad loss for racing. Condolences to his family and friends. RIP.
Nicely said Oddy and i feel the same - those really were halcyon days for BBC sport and Julian was an integral part of it. In an era dominated by ex participants and, God help us, personalities, it's easy to forget just how good their coverage used to be across the board. RIP
Yes I think Julian Wilson was a true professional. He walked into the shoes of the marvellous Clive Graham, after his sad death in the mid '70s and managed it very well. His father was the less balanced Daily Mirror journalist but Julian rarely showed any of his father's 'loose cannon' characteristics. He knew about sport, he knew about horses and owned a few himself. He was a true friend of racing and racegoers, but especially TV racing watchers. It's not been the same since he left in the late '90s.
