But we are on Humberside. Newcastle are on Tyneside. Sunderland on Wearside. Everton are on Merseyside. Etc.
So you don't like Humberside- that's no reason to deny it's existence. I don't like Leeds Utd - but they exist.
It's not a question of liking or disliking, it simply doesn't exist. It's about history and culture. Deal with it.
In your mind, it doesn't exist- in most other people's mind it does exist. It's the region around the Humber estuary. There are countless references to it in the media everday and there have been for many decades. I would suggest you are the one who had to deal with it.
So the only criterion for the existence of a place is if there is a signpost for it? Does West Hull exist? Do the Cotswolds exist? Does the South East exist?
"Despite the abolition of the county, the term 'Humberside' has not fallen out of use as a general geographic designation. There is still a Humberside Police, a Humberside Airport (roughly halfway between Scunthorpe and Grimsby), a Humberside Fire Service and BBC Radio Humberside (founded in 1971). The former Humberside county was also the basis for the Hull and Humber Ports City Region an area whose economic development is supported by the Humber Economic Partnership (HEP), a sub-regional economic development partnership. This sub-region comprises the four districts of the former county of Humberside. The City Region has a population of 887,500, of whom 380,000 work in 30,000 businesses. It is one of eight city regions defined in the 2004 document Moving Forward: The Northern Way, a collaboration between the three northern Regional Development Agencies which is a part of the 20 year government strategy to grow the economy of Northern England. The Hull and Humber Ports City Region Development Plan vision for the City region is of a global gateway with a thriving, outward-looking sustainable economy building on its unique assets of location, the estuary, ports connectivity, and physical environment." In short, it will continue to be used as a term for the local region.
Good grief- for once I'm in agreement with Stu - the area round the estuary of the Humber = Humberside, which when i last looked included the City of Hull. FFS its a no brainer. Find another stick to beat the 'southern softies metropolitan arse lickers wino journos' will you!
How desperate is that? Trying to claim it exists because the Police use the name. <Laugh> The ambulances used to be Tyne and North Yorkshire, does that mean we're part of those places too? Move on, you flop every time you push this argument.
You seem to have a bit of blindspot about this issue. The area on both sides of the Humber estuary is often referred to as 'Humberside' by journalists and commercial/business groups. There. That wasn't so painful was it?
I'm so blind, I can't see a single signpost for this 'region' you mention. Perhaps they're hidden behind the East Yorkshire ones?
I've contacted the other mods. Looks like a 'flat earther' has hacked into DMD's account. He'll probably be saying the Fens or the Black Country don't exist either.
Oh they exist. They have a history and sense of place. The 'businesses' you talk of, are probably the same ones that backed Allams equally silly name change. I'm not really sure why you're so desperate to be linked with Scunthorpe.
I'm not. Not sure how you manage to link the Allam sycophants and parasites with Development Organisations and the Fire Brigade. I'm sure Scousers have a history and sense of place as Liverpudlians and Merseysiders. Incidentally, never seen a sign for Merseyside- does it not exist then?
