I must admit I take little notice of chips ! Being in the fish trade it's all about the fish in my case !
Gainsborough was ace - two colours of bread and butter (class!) and they also did fantastic "fish cakes". Inghams in Filey is good (as stated earlier), Mother Hubbards in Scarborough, Carvers over the market is consistent and Brett's in Headingly is a bit pricey but hard to beat on quality. Frydays in Anlaby is also top quality. Foreign efforts usually fall short of our high standards but I have had reasonable facsimllies in Palm Beach (North Sydney) and at Spinnakers in Victoria (Vancouver Island). Truth is, there's just no bad fish and chips.....
I went to the Goldenfry near Costa Coffee in town for the first time in about 10 years. Nostalgically I always considered them better than Bob Carvers as the food was cooked in sunflower oil rather than lard. Was most disappointed that they seemed to have changed everything and now just taste the same as any other chippie.
