It's a joke really. When I was learning to sail I hated working on the foredeck so the nicknamed me Foredeckdave. It's a double joke because particularly in racing circles the foredecker is a vital crew member and one who really has to excel in that position. So naturally with my nickname they just assumed that I was one of their crazies! The Dave bit is self-explanatory
