I will be sending the mrs down to Cave St for haddock pattie chips n peas with scraps.I'm even going to let her have some herself. It's a good day today.
Gone off the salt and vinegar lark though Chazz they do a nice fruity curry sauce at my local chippy, but there again we have fish & chips at anytime so although it's traditional for today its not a once a year treat for us. And I have to say fish today can never match what father in law use to bring home when he was on trawlers, although many years ago I still savour the filletts of haddock we use to stock up with.
Know what you mean ref. my old next door neighbour, Dennis, was one of the last of the trawler skippers. Used to always give us a load of halibut and haddock.
Molly Mollones - Hessle Road Sue Downs - Marfleet Lane On the nominations for the best chippys for 2014 there isn't a single Hull chippy included. 149 in Brid and Quayside in Whitby, but nothing in Hull. ****ers.
The chippy on the street just before Sewerby Hall does seriously good fish and chips. Biked there last year and ate them near the cricket green in the grounds.
It really does! Chippies get better as you go west to east. Liverpool chippies are crap, (at least the one's I've been to). Manchester, a bit better. Leeds/West Yorkshire far better but Hull is far and away the best. Anlaby Road chippy and the one in Brough, (forget what it's called) rule!
Being a soft Southern City fan we don't have Fish and chips as such today. We have salmon, wedges and pea's!!!!! Haddock and chips in my local chippy £5.95 and the fish is minute. One of the pubs near us does Cod, Chips, Mushy peas £12.00. Truth of the matter is that today I cannot actually go anywhere in a sensible length of time. All roads to the New Forest are clogged and Southampton is gridlocked. The train station is shut, there are road works all around town and we have cruise ships in!!!
Any shop can enter - it's up to the owners to take part. here's a full map of previous shops that have won an award (there are about 12-15 awards per year for all sorts of categories) http://www.fishandchipawards.com/awards-map/
I've not 'bean' in a chippy this year. Not touched a donner and have had 1 takeaway curry. I'm looking more like you know who every day, now where's that Bass sweatshirt gone?
