THE HOOPS striker was accused of attacking a stranger in an Edinburgh street but the case was abandoned after the Crown failed to produce witnesses to give evidence.

Griffiths, 23, was accused of attacking Craig Shearer last June by seizing him by the neck and pushing him on to a road in Edinburgh.
But a judge – who said he didn’t know Scotland striker Griffiths was a footballer – abandoned the case after prosecutors failed to cite the alleged victim and a witness. Griffiths arrived for his trial at Edinburgh’s Justice of the Peace Court with his girlfriend Linzi McCartney.

But when the case was called, prosecutor Sarah Lumsden asked for an adjournment until June as they’d been unable to trace the two Crown witnesses – despite saying in March that they had been cited.

She claimed: “It is in the public interest this case continues. This was a violent and unprovoked attack on a complete stranger.”
Griffiths’s defence solicitor, Kathleen More, opposed the motion “in the strongest possible terms” due to the personal circumstances of the accused.

She said: “These proceedings are having a major impact on his career at a national and local level. Every time he requires to be in court, he is the subject of media attention and this is stressful to him.” More added: “The Crown must accept that they are at fault.”

Justice Les McEwan said he had no knowledge that Griffiths was a footballer, before adding: “Any accused has the right to expect the charges against him to be dealt with expeditiously. “Taking that into account, the Crown’s motion to adjourn is refused.”

He deserted the case. Griffiths made no comment as he left.

Does seem like this was charged over who he is rather than the case itself though.

Plenty of things the daft wee fud has actually done without charging him for pish like this.

Yep, if we took everyone to court for allegedly seizing him by the neck and pushing him on to a road the courts would be full. This was probably handbags, there's not even an allegation of a punch being thrown.
