I could go be a programmer if the betting industry went to ****, there's about 150 C# jobs up in Belfast at any one time with a floor wage of about £30k. If I didn't do that I could always go back to tarmacking roads, or working down mines in Canada (a load of my mates would hook me up), or I could install satellite dishes (I'm quite the amateur satellite engineer). I could go work in KFC again, I'd be a shop manager within a year - would be a pitiful £25k salary, but my base costs are low since I've investment income and I've been paying off mortgage debt.

Life is easy when you get off your hole and do stuff for yourself.

Stop being a 'selfish ****ing spoilt ****' Ciaran and start feeling sorry for yourself, since you are a working class person living in a socially deprived area.

Saying a certain section of society should be able to take more responsibility for their own needs is a separate issue from defending the well off,l which I am sure you noted I didnt do. Personally I think the well off should be taxed to a greater level however that additional revenue would have to be used better than it seems to be now.

Fuel costs fluctuate , they rise , they fall . Yet household fuel bills only ever go up . The big six have it all sown up , price fixing is a matter of fact and is done with impunity .

Affordable social housing Is a must . There is no reason why councils cannot build and maintain rental accommodation and run then at a profit . Or is it only the private sector who are able to make a profit from leasing ?
When was the house you lived in built ? Pretty sure it would have been before central heating was the norm in British houses . Any new builds these day have central heating , double glazing etc as standard

In the long run it would save us money . Mighr put a few private landlords out of business though .

Much as I would enjoy being a tree surgeon (at least I'd be outdoors) I'm afraid I work in the rather boring world of politics. It's not as exciting as taking money off desperate people with gambling addictions I grant you but it pays the bills nevertheless.

Or better still, feed the stray dogs (and cats) to the homeless.

Or feed the homeless to the stray animals and the stray animals to those who use the food bank thereby creating a self-sustaining food chain. <ok>

    This thread <laugh>

It's funny the way that Mick the tax dodger and Cieran, who openly admits to engaging in housing benefit fraud, are always so keen to take the moral high ground when it comes to benefits and the poor.

    Pair of hypocritical **** draughts.

Aye, at least I pay all my taxes and have never claimed any form of benefits. I can be a **** all I want by that logic.

Actually most of our customers tend to be quite wealthy Asians - it's a form of wealth redistribution (from rich people to me), which I am sure you are all for.

My point from the very start was that the statistic don't add up with the point that people in the same demographic are getting fatter... and that private charities seem to have the whole food bank thing covered - private society has stepped in to cater for a social need - why's that the problem? - shouldn't it be good that society can manage itself without the need for indebted Government spending?

We have all these riled up do-gooders like Toby nearly breaking into tears because a low-brow tabloid has a picture of an American crying child on the front page - "WE MUST DO SOMETHING!" was his emotional cry yesterday (although a few weeks ago he seriously suggested that the world was over-populated and we need to let Africans starve... I act the emotionless ****, but I genuinely don't want people to starve, even Africans...). So what must we do as a collective? Should we get a load of spades and pay these people to dig holes in the ground then fill them back up? Should we try to continue to make them work in Poundland before giving them benefits (I am sure Toby likes this one)? Should we just start throwing more money blindly at benefits? - but then what about the £60bn per year interest that is currently being charged, which is quickly catching up with the entire education budget - if you pile more on top of that when there will be less money to go to benefits next year?

The truth is you and Toby didn't even asked the questions above before running around in circles screaming that it's not fair.

BTW you called me a tax dodger, I'd be willing to bet that I have one of the highest tax bills of anyone on this forum. The reason my tax is in the main going to the IOM Government is because they have been competitive with tax in order to make jobs here. I'm sure one of your solutions to the above questions would be to tax the balls out of corporations, or middle income to wealthier people - and therefore keep the likes of me and my company offshore, and from contributing anything to the UK (I don't feel morally obliged to do that btw, as an Irish citizen who had UK troops pointing guns at me most of my childhood). There is a marketplace of states, and individuals and companies will pick the best one for them, you up taxes in the UK and we'll keep waving at you from offshore.

    Mick,

I speed visit this site while at work. If there are more than 100 words I'm not going to read it. I suspect that's true for most people who are at work during the day.

I read the first paragraph. The reason so many people in that demographic are overweight is because they can only afford cheap food which is notoriously high in fat and/or sugar. Being in that demographic also sees people more likely to suffer from mental and physical health problems which often leads to dietary problems.

The reason we have so many people in that demographic is because of the way our society is.

Fair enough, when you get the chance to read further my question was what the solution is? (I'm not denying there is some sort of problem, just tabloid headlines aren't enough in themselves to convince me)

Eat the rich. Though there's not so much meat on the ****s these days, as they all have personal trainers. I vote we throw up a guillotine in EC1 outside the Bank of England, decapitate a few bankers, and feed their entrails to the poor and needy.
