Remember all the people on contracts would be submitting expenses additions to the bill. The £150k would be a very few BBC permanent staff.
Did anybody read about that guy in the magazine "F1 racing" a few months back? He saved up £25,000 going to every grand prix on the calendar? Travel, food and accommodation etc... Now think how many people from the BBC that go to these Grand Prix's with Jake and Co... 20+??? we might get a clearer picture on how much they spend.
For 20 people that's £500k, so £150k per year doesn't sound shocking. I'm sure it's a bit of a gravy train for some people and there are plenty of savings to be made but it's not as shocking spending £2m per race to show the FOM feed.
Typical BBC. We excel at a sport, so they want to cut it. F1 and the beeb were made for each other. Didn't they start broadcasting it in the 50's? I read earlier that the wimbledon final only attracts about 5 million viewers. Most races that the beeb cover get more than that. I don't care if it's considered an institution, it's boring and needs to be cut.

Belittling other sports, such as tennis doesn't make for fair reasoning. Wimbledon isn't a tournament involving some obscure sport that hardly anyone plays like lacrosse or something, it's a very popular game so lets not go over the top. From 1997 until 2007 the F1 WDC wasn't British and from 2000 until 2008 the WCC weren't British so would that have been a good reason to stop showing F1?

The apprentice isn't too bad. Better than all the other crap the BBC decide is good for the british public. And another thing. Save QI as well, and newsnight, all sensible programming can stay, but gameshows and reality tv must go.
At the moment I seem to be paying 30 pounds a month for my license fee, not only are they robbing me blind, if they give F1 to Sky I might seriously not consider not paying any future license fees, I haven't watched Test Match cricket for a few years now and no F1 would be the final straw.
I personally feel that all this talk of F1 leaving the BBC has very little substance. The BBC put a lot of effort into F1 and to throw it away so soon would make no business sense. They have lost a lot of sports over the last 10 years so they need something to present their case for keeping the licence fee at its current levels.
yes they have let go of a lot of sports - and may do more. The Board are under pressure to cut - and may respond to all the dozens of minority programme viewers with continuing material. A big scalp like F1 going would push the Government into allowing raised licence fees. Maybe we should start a campaign to write to all MPs insisting free-to-air is supported by BBC bidding for the following x years. Lets not take the risk of some out-of-touch exec dropping the coverage!
The only thing I am sure of regarding this issue is, I wont pay Murdoch an effing penny to watch F1. Who the bloody hell is running the BBC anyway, it's financed by us, watched by us, so we need to lobby the people at the BBC, we own the bloody thing.
So is broadcasting F1 a waste of money? Surely The beeb make a profit on what they have spent otherwise I wouldnt blame them for wanting to jump ship.
The director general of the BBC is Mark Thompson since 2004, so all we need to do is all send in letters of support for F1 to remain on the Beeb, if that fails we can resort to foul means,remember this guy is also responsible for the over moderation used on the original BBC606, so it's about time we got our own back.
There won't be any financial profit to the BBC. Sure, they might sell the broadcast to some cable channel in Australasia that broadcasts the races at 2am but it's not going to cover the £2m per race the BBC pays to FOM (actually I read that the annual cost to the BBC is more like £31m, so £1.5m per race). The BBC isn't there to make a profit - it's there to provide programming that is in the public interest.
