If there was one Hull City match I could watch that occurred before my time, this would be the one. You older lot always go on about it. My Dad always said we were robbed when a Chelsea defender hand-balled a City shot off the line. Can't remember if that was in the first match or replay however.
The obvious handball was in the away game at Chelsea - I think it was Boyle who clearly scooped a header off the line. The referee was Jack Taylor who went on to ref the World Cup final in 1974 (I think!) - just shows that they've always favoured the big clubs. Chelsea had already knocked the (then) mighty Leeds United and Manchester United out and City really gave them a fright with the two late goals by Waggy. Until Sunday this was always my most memorable City away day.
I was in the Far East at that time; predicted a draw in their first match, but thought City might take them in the replay. I was gutted but proud, because there were a lot of plaudits for the team that almost...
Interesting to see the amount of divots on the pitch as it looked like a bowling green from the stands.
I was at that game. We had moved to County Durham but I hitched to Hull, stayed with my cousins and as I recall, l I queued from about 4:00 in the afternoon to get in. Boothferry Park was packed but as previously noted, we weren't really in it. I remember Simpkin who was pissed at one of the Chelsea players and slammed the ball on his head as he sat on the deck following a challenge. I used to hitch down for a few games in those days.
I left work at 1.00pm and started queuing at about 1.30pm. Never seen so many since the Man U home game years before. Like you say, Tommy Docherty had done his homework and we weren't in it but Simpkins 'wobbly' goal was a lifter for a while.
This is one game where today's term of 'plastics' could be attributed as never had I had to join a queue that stretched from the turnstiles right back to the railway bridge on Boothferry Rd. I remember with disgust egg chasing supporters who later on bragging about going to the game were laughing their socks off at City's defeat and the many blokes who had never been near Boothferry Park in years suddenly becoming life long supporters. Luckilly for me being on the small side many guys let me get to the front of the queue pretty quickly thank goodness and I ended up right behind the goal at the North Stand end. It was a situation I got use to as City had a few important league games with impressive crowd numbers then when interest had evaporated we regulars had more room to roam often going from one end of the ground to the other depending which end City were playing and desite internal turnstiles where extra payment was sometimes needed to get in the East or West stands, goodness knows why.
Yes it was, I was at both games. I spoke to Jock Davidson in Anlaby a few months after the game and he was furious with Jack Taylor, and from what I hear he never forgave him.
