Brighton and Hove Albion v Charlton Athletic Saturday 12th April 2014 3:07pm Kick-Off Referee: Roger East (Wiltshire) Apologies for the lateness of this Weekendâs match thread yet once again as the season begins to wind down the Addicks return to Saturday Football once more having only a few days to recover from the craziness of our last performance on Tuesday night in the 3-2 win over Yeovil Town⦠This week has certainly been all about Southern teams (makes a change for the travelling Addicks fans who am sure by now know the majority of Yorkshire like the backs of their hands) as Charlton travel to Play-Off chasing Brighton and Hove Albion where another three points will go a long way (for both sides) in their quests for survival and promotion respectfully. As Jose Riga has been saying in the past weeks itâs all about Charlton and their performances yet with the win on Tuesday, the Addicks have certainly dragged three more sides into trouble and a win today could see Charlton climb to the dizzy heights of 18th (Get the oxygen out for high altitude lads) should results go their way whilst should that happen today (or should it not happen today) then Charlton still have two more games in hand to cement their position in the League for next season. Of course against Brighton and Hove Albion it wonât be that easy and itâs not just a mutual hatred of a Surrey rival that the two clubs share (Yes Brighton it is YOUR fault for their form in the Premier League this season⦠Now go hang your heads!), but also in players⦠There is of course a first appearance against his previous side for Dale Stephens who departed for more Northern climates in January (Remember Addicks fans if you want to go travelling please donât ask Iain Dowie for directions) and then on the non-playing Staff you also have Nathan Jones up against his previous employers who will certainly have a close eye on his lasting legacies in Jordan Cousins and Diego Poyet. 26.12.2013 â Charlton Athletic 3-2 Brighton and Hove Albion Bloody heck am talking about a match where we won the previous encounter⦠With both sides fresh from eating too much turkey, a spirited performance was put in from both sides on a pitch that was in one of its most debatable states all season â Thankfully it was the Addicks who came out on top, rallying two goals from Lawrie Wilson before a typical Yann Kermorgant free-kick⦠the Addicks didnât have it all their own way though and had to come from behind following an early Brighton goal courtesy of Leonardo Ulloa before the same Striker grabbed a consolation goal in the 90th minute to setup a tense finish. Last Addicks Double over Brighton What with there being few chances this season Iâve decided to add this new feature for this Match Thread as against Brighton and Blackburn, the Addicks stand a chance of doing the double over two sides this season⦠In terms of Brighton you have to go back to 1992 when the Addicks last did the double over this side with a 2-0 victory at the Valley prior to a 2-1 victory in the reverse⦠Ironically that 2-1 win at Brighton was also the last time Charlton won on the road over the seagulls. Brighton⦠the Stats And so on to the statistics and Brighton havenât had the fortress at the Amex that theyâd have liked⦠theyâve won on eight occasions at home whilst theyâve lost and drawn equally six times, theyâve kept 7 clean sheets with the Seagulls scoring on 25 occasions whilst conceding 20 times, their biggest victory at home to date was a 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers whilst their biggest defeat was a 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest. Goals this season have mostly come from Leonardo Ulloa (12) whilst Andrew Crofts (4) and Will Buckley (3) follow in the scoring charts⦠the Addicks will certainly need to be at their most watchfulness in the last 15-minutes of the match as over 34% of goals come in this period whilst Brighton are most likely to be at their most sluggish prior to half-time. Charlton Team News Unfortunately we donât get the weekly press conferences with Jose Riga like with did with Chris Powell so itâs more difficult to judge what the Team could be⦠Lawrie Wilson missed the Yeovil match with an eye socket problem so could return against Brighton (with a face mask) whilst Michael Morrison or Loic Nego could deputise should Wilson fail to be fit enough⦠Marvin Sordell will be ineligible against Bolton Wanderers next Friday so could return alongside Reza Ghoochanneijad (with both players putting in good shifts against Yeovil) although that too is questionable with Jose Riga seemingly to prefer a rotation policy, if that is the case then it could be the turn of Jonathan Obika (who spent time on loan at Brighton earlier in the season) to lead the line⦠Of course with the Addicks up against Barnsley on Tuesday; Jose could have one eye on that match over today so there could be a few players rested. Possible Side to Face Brighton Hamer Wilson â Morrison â Dervite â Wiggins Cousins â Poyet Ghoochanneijad â Ajdarevic â Jackson Sordell *Should Wilson be unfit then Loic Nego at Right Back Substitutes Bench Thuram â Fox â Wood â Petrucci â Harriott â Obika â Pigott A4Lâs Prediction: 2-1 (Sordell, Jackson)
Great stuff again, A4L. The team is probably right, not sure about the bench. Cort will probably be in instead of Wood, Harriott has been unconvincing recently, more likely Nego or Hughes on the bench in case Wilson has any problems. That would leave Petrucci as the only midfield option though for when Astrid's legs go.Dervite can play DM but he'd only get in Poyet's way. So I'd promote Holmes-Dennis, he looks about ready, and Jacko's legs might go as well.
I think Riga will rest a few players in preparations for Tuesday, so wouldn't be surprised to see Church, Harriott and possibly Petrucci coming in. If we play a full strength side then I wouldn't be surprised if it were 0-0. Brighton have drawn a blank in 4 of their last 6. If we rotate as I expect, then I think they will continue their Leicester exploits and win by 2 goals.
Interesting as well on the BBC website that it says Brighton havent beaten us at Home since 1990 themselves
This is the round where the teams around us suffer, i see all losing tonight. Doncaster and Barnsley will lose, and the Hornets will be too good for the Wall. Cross everything. Diego to slam home a winner tonight !
Afternoon all Charlton: Hamer; Wilson, Wiggins, Morrison, Dervite; Poyet, Cousins, Jackson, Ajdarevic; Sordell, Ghoochannejhad Subs: Thuram-Ulien, Wood, Fox, Solly, Harriott, Church, Pigott. Brighton: Ankergren; Bruno, Upson, Greer, Ward; Andrews, Stephens, March; LuaLua, Lingard, Ulloa Subs: Brezovan, Dunk, Rodriguez, Calderon, Mackail-Smith, Forster-Caskey, David Solly is back on the bench! Wilson is also back in the team, and other than that it's the same side that beat Yeovil. Stephens starts for Brighton COYA!
Hamer, Wilson, Wiggins, Morro, Dervite, Jacko, Cousins, Poyet, Astrid, Sordell and Reza not bad line up... but far more excited Solly is on the bench. Think that shows just how bad Nego is if they bring back Solly who I would happily have sit out til pre season if it meant he was fit
Same as all season, adequate defence and midfield but crap attack. Below a blind man and a cripple in the pecking order! I just hope Wilson and Solly are not risking their health and careers to cover for the management's incompetence.
Cracking start lads! Lets see how many rip into Poyet for a mistake like they would had Church or Jacko done it... But lets be positive people COYR
