It would probably be mostly English players I agree. But the current England squad is certainly lacking flair. Here's a 4-4-2 midfield: Walcott Ramsey Wilshere Bale Wilshere is pretty much nailed on and so is Ramsey, as the Welsh captain. Even though he suffers from Spuditus, Bale would be a strong choice down the left. Walcott may be a little more divisive but I can't see an alternative to him. Also, he will be 23 by the time of the Olympics but not before January 2012 so he will be eligible. I see a problem with including players from all of the home nations. You don't want token players as that would be insulting to whomever it applies. I can't pretend to follow Scottish football closely and they may have little Mcmessi in their youth ranks but there's no real stand out contenders for the team. Conor Henderson might make the squad as a Northern Islander in Arsenal's youth ranks but he's not really there yet. Players I can conceivably think of who would be in the squad. A strong Arsenal bias again, but that's purely knowledge based: Phil Jones, Kieran Gibbs, Kyle Bartley, Conor Henderson, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Andy Carroll, Henri Lansbury, Jordan Henderson, Smalling, Jack Rodwell, Danny Rose, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Wilson Wow, I can see why the home nations (other than England) are so opposed to a team GB. English players are massively overrated and yet are likely to make up the bulk of the team. It would end up either being England with extras or a team with a quota that is uncompetitive. That said, I do think the first option would have a chance of winning a medal. GK RB Jones Bartley Gibbs Walcott Wilshere Ramsey Bale 2ndST Carroll Or play a 4-3-3 standard back 5 Rodwell Wilshere Ramsey Walcott Bale Carroll For the record I think Carroll is dross but he'll still be on the team. As I said before, England are crap. But so are Scotland, Wales and Northern Island. Between us we do have a decent team though. Wilshere and Rambo are special talents in midfield and it's a pairing we Arsenal fans are talking up as the new Xavi/Iniesta. Assuming that these Olympics would not affect the national teams in FIFA competitions, I'd be more than happy to see a team GB. Well, to be perfectly honest, I'd be happy to see one for FIFA competitions too, but that's me personally.
I'm not very knowledgeable about any of this Olympics nonsense, but why is that basically the U-21 team?
im actually looking forward to it going to 1 quater, semi and final its a one in a lifetime chance to see all the home nations together
-------------------Hart------------------ Walker----Smalling----Jones-----Bale --Ramsey-----Rodwell-----McEachran- Wilshire-------Sturridge------Walcott This would be my team choice.
I went through the Scotland squad trying to find a player that could be in the team and the only two that I'd have are Craig Gordon and Darren Fletcher but obviously neither of them are under 23. Scotland's future looks pretty bleak, youth wise.
When you consider that getting knocked out at the first opportunity is as bad as it can get, then no, sadly it isn't...
So it would be better to have more Scottish (never gone past the first round in a major tournement), Welsh (haven't qualified for a major tournement since the 50s) or Northern Irish (haven't qualified for a major tournement since about 86) players?
That was still part of qualifying. It was a 2 legged play-off, much like they have now. Only 4 teams qualified for the tournement finals back then, a very different competition to what we have now. But point still stands, Wales haven't qualified for a major tournement since the 50s.
Why would you put Wilshere on the right wing? Here's mine, including the 3 over 23 players: ---------------- Hart ------------ Walker --- Jones --- Smalling --- Cole/Baines -------------- Rodwell ------------ ----- Wilshere -------- Ramsey Walcott ------------------------ Bale ------------ Rooney
