The mines are only one possible source of the name, but it does show that the are covered by geordies. It also points out the lack of much use of the term mackem apart from in the very recent past.

 

Such as Sunderland fans throughout the 70's and 80's and to a degree even more recent.

 

By definition I'm a posh Yorkshireman(born in Richmond) ....however I've always been referred to as " Geordie " wherever I've worked in the UK because of my accent.

 

The other being some **** to do with the Jacobite Rebellion, where the settlement of Newcaslte were loyal to the the king, hence the term 'geordie' whereas Sunderland was not.
