I don't think he'll get a PL job straight away, especially in the bottom half of the league. The teams in the bottom half that have a good chance of staying up are the ones that replace their manager with experience. Chances are he'll have to take on a job in the Championship after this and try to take the team up like lots of other young or inexperienced managers have had to.
"If you sack him he will have proved himself enough for a permanent managerial role at any of the clubs in the bottom half of the PL, especially at the rate they're going through managers these days." No, he won't. But that hypothesis may be tested soon enough.
If his mate is still in charge at Swindon he'll find a job very, very quickly - which may be useful for loaning out youngsters to gain experience.
He may go to Swindon. But with the Os possibly promoted, and QPR not, Spurs will have quite a choice of clubs to loan to.
He's had a tendency to either get it completely wrong or completely right as far as lineup and tactics go. But it may be that he's succeeded on the most important front, which is getting a half new team to settle in and play the way a Spurs team should play. (And it may not--the last five games should be a good test). He certainly deserves credit for getting brilliant performances from Ade and Eiriksen, and also for raising the stock of a couple of our youth players. If he wanted to argue his case, he could say, let's say I was manager from the start of the season, and the Sunderland game was our fifteenth or twentieth instead of our thirty-third. Would you like our chances to do well this year?
If Van Gaal takes over we could end up with him being called LVG as I've noticed that's already creeping onto forums. LVG a better version of AVB? . Although I've still to find out if anyone openly called Ferguson SAF. Sherwoods first name is Timothy but that isn't used, his middle name is Alan so we could start calling him TAS.
I agree Boss. Harry, Jol and even Tim feel much more like real Spurs managers than AVB ever did but I would still argue that the really great manager we need to take us from exciting losers to exciting winners is going to look off the pace during the transitional phase.
It really does underline just how much the club have progressed under ENIC & Daniel Levy. Before them, getting Champions League football would have been beyond the wildest dream of any Spurs fan. Now, not getting it is a bitter disappointment.
I'm not disputing that progress has been made. ENIC have invested more into the club than the previous owners. However, I can't help thinking that even more progress could, and would have been made were it not for some abysmal managerial appointment decisions.
Fair enough Power, I knew that (you knew) Avb wasn't a typical spurs manager, even if you did defend him as you know as much as anyone here what type of manager this club needs in terms of being a spurs man but also we have to be realistic as we aren't going to find the next Alex Ferguson with the way the club is run so there are limitations as to who we can hire under Levy. We do, some are misguided, some are unlucky while others where needed. Managers like Ramos & Santini where highly regarded, in fact I remember when Ramos was hired we had every pundit telling us how amazing his Sevilla team was and how we should be prepared to see him transform us, same with Avb. Then you had the comical managers like Gross (under sugar) or the ones always set to fail like Graham (Sugar) & Hoddle (for different reasons) and thats one of the troubles with our hiring policy, under Levy (and pre Levy) we have gone for virtually every type of manager, Experienced, unknown, British, foreign, rookie.......works with a Dof, doesn't work with a Dof. Thats why it comes down to fluking a good manager like Jol or Redknapp, if you keep on sacking managers then you will eventually find someone that is a good fit, just don't sack them this time!
I think you could have said much the same about United just before they hired Ferguson - he was by no means obviously an upgrade over Docherty, Sexton and Atkinson at the time, more a desperation move and he took a few years to settle. This hiring managers business is more luck than judgement.
Didn't Ferguson finish 2nd in his second season then 11th the following? If that happened under Levy do you believe he would see the bigger picture and say he had shown what's possible if given more time? I personally doubt Levy would.
Tim won't get another Prem job just yet, he'll need to go the Championship/ League 1 to prove his mettle first. For the most part, I think Levy has sacked managers at the right times, with the exception of Jol and Harry. Jol's tenure was going a bit off the boil but to sack a man midway through a bloody game after what he'd done for us was totally unfair. Where as with Harry, everyone knows how I felt with his sacking, I've only gone over it about a 150 times, our best manager in the Prem era who actually would've got us Champions League football twice had it not been for Chelsea and Levy goes and sacks him for a Chelsea failure. I'm still very much "Pro Levy/ ENIC" though, despite their faults we wouldn't even be dreaming of getting Champions League football, let alone being disappointed at missing out. Yes things could've got even better had Levy done a few things differently but I always believe Levy makes his decisions based on what he feels is best for our club, and seeing some chairmen in today's game, that seems to be a rare commodity nowadays.
His hiring is suspect, but as far as i'm concerned his firing is spot on. Even Jol and Harry who i liked.
I suspect Levy is more interested in seeing a consistent approach that accords with what he agreed at the time of appointment rather than actual placings. But if someone says at the interview that they can get the current squad to top 4 and then finishes 11th and asks for a £60m spend - I know what I would think. I could never see Harry and Levy working long-term because Harry doesn't have a consistent approach to such things. Sherwood is interesting - when Levy asked him if he would take over when AVB was sacked do you think he said that he would need to have a big clear out over the summer? If not then Levy will think that is a good reason not to trust him
Isn't the folklore around Fergie that if he had not reached/won the FA Cup final in 1990, Man Utd were going to sack him at the end of that season ?? And if anyone has found on youtube the Spitting Image spoof of Big Ron they did a few days before he got sacked, please let me know.
In the last five years, Spurs have had three managers: Redknapp, Villas-Boas, Sherwood In the last five years, Liverpool have had four managers: Benitez, Hodgson, Dalglish, Rodgers Don't let the facts get in the way, eh?
Interesting stuff, hbic. And how have the Poool benefited in the PL over Spurs during the said period all those Spurs managers have been sacked ... ??
