Another difference is that Gunn took charge with some time to prevent relegation in the Championship. Adams is taking charge playing 4 of the big 6 and our bogey team knowing that they have to win at least one in all likelihood or face relegation.
Anti football is not just long ball. It's defensive, rigid and negative. You stop yourself playing at the expense of stopping your opponent.
I think you mean that the other way round. You are spot on that Hughton was far more interested in stopping the opponents from scoring than scoring himself. That'd be great if he was just a defensive coach. Not so great when you're supposed to be inspiring the whole team.
I don't know whether the effect of Neil Adams is the reason for the decision, I think it's more the effect of Hughtons departure. I know Hughton didn't have the easiest of times with us but these last few weeks our players looked absolutely devoid of confidence. The clean slate the new manager offers and the change in philosophies etc. Is probably uplifting to the squad and increases morale in the camp. This isn't an attack on Adams or Hughton. It's just why I think the move will work out well. I can't see Adams getting the job whether we stay up or not, there is nobody else who would take the Norwich job for 5 games.
True - I was more meaning the Allardyce/Pulis style, which was not ours. Negative, "dragging them down to our level" football is, in a way, anti-football. However, I would argue that when you come up against a big team, there does need to be an element of stopping them playing their own game. Which is why I think Hughton had relative success against them, at elast at home. What he didn't play is Allardici style.
Yeah, Hughton was never long through the middle, he was only the next one up though, long from the wings, particularly the first season. Anyway, the clown has gone, I don't really want to talk about him now I don't have to.
Apparently he's keen on getting the younger players on the pitch(unsurprisingly): https://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/premier-league-adams-willing-put-faith-youth-070703155--sow.html So maybe Josh will feature Saturday, on another note I like the part where he says "The qualities I will be looking to stamp down on are tactics, motivating players and getting them to play to instructions", sounds like what we need right now.
But look back at what CH did to Holty? He stifled his attack play making him more defensive & made him play in a system that he despised. How do we know that this isn't the reason RVW or Hooper have struggled? I think Adams will unleash them to play to there strengths not some stupid arsed system that constantly left us looking like fools. I really believe that his attack minded ness will help the strikers do what they have done at their previous clubs, they don't become bad over night? They both scored shed loads before they hooked up with CH
He's hardly going to say "you'll be replaced in the summer no matter what". If he wins every game he won't be replaced. I still think if we stay up its Neil Lennons job. If we go down possibly Malky.
Reflecting on the point made elsewhere that McNally has history when it comes to bringing in somewhat unfashionable managers largely overlooked (Hodgson to Fulham) - am I the only one who see the dice rolling Steve McLaren our way over the summer?
I've said time and time again that the reason RvW and GH have not scored many goals is down to the system/tactics CH played. Who knows, if Redmond is selected for the game on Sat, he MAY be played on the RIGHT wing and so negate his need to cut inside!!!
You can't even begin to compare Gunn and Adams Gunn had a rubbish squad so many loans no structure and he had no experience Adams has been given a good squad and has got some experience Neil will do a good job and hopefully somehow will get us those precious points Saturday OTBC
No. It was being economical with the truth. If Adams wins two, draws two of our last five, I can see McNally feeling he has no choice. But Adams won't. So we will be getting a new manager.
No, but 'doing the job well' is a very elastic statement. Anyway, I don't think there's any point thinking about next season until we've survived this.
