He's still a Liverpool fan so I wouldn't count on it.

Surely not! Don't think he would go to Utd but you never know in the strange world of football.

How much would you lot be prepared to pay for him? Age must be a concern (no pun intended) when thinking of a fee.

The problem is, is his age isn't relative to his skill meaning you may pay over the odds for someone who will have little to no resale value in a couple of years, if you were to sign hi then i'd be genuinely shocked

he's 29 but he's a class act, thought he was fantastic at liverpool and think he is now. I'd be willing to pay the best part of 25-30 million. It'd probably be less but of course the prices have moved up so much now and i'm not really sure how much anyone is worth anymore

I would rather we sent £35 million on Seijder than £25 million on Alonso, but tbh I don't think this rumour is likely to be true.

£25 mill on an admittedly good Liverpool reject? No thanks.

Not exactly a liverpool reject, he is still good enough for them now.

He has always been good enough for them, but they rejected him.

He's good enough for most teams, he plays for Real Madrid after all.. It was just Rafa's fault for being stubborn with Barry.

I'm not convinced to be honest. He's a great player, but I don't think he would suit our style of play. At Liverpool he was playing in a relatively narrow and defensive midfield, and almost never played with out and out wingers, so he found it much easier to dictate all their play through the centre. At United, so much of our attacks go through the centre and he would only have one central midfield partner. I don't think that system would bring out the best in him - he'd end up as either a slightly better version of Carrick, or at the worst another Veron.

I don't see why we should buy him. He's pretty much the same player as Carrick but perhaps just a little bit better. If I used the FIFA overall ratings, I'd rate Carrick 82 but Alonso 85. Like others have said, I'd rather we spend the money on Sneijder.

I have to agree - Carrick is nowhere near Alonso.

Alonso is better than Carrick in my opinion. Having said that I agree with the previous post, I don't think his style of play would suit United. My feeling on the CM position we need to fill is that he not only needs to be creative but also score goals. Chelsea have Lampard, Arsenal - Fabregas, Liverpool - Gerrard, City - Toure. All of these players get goals from the middle of the park that is vital for a top team. We have missed that the last few years. Scholes used to play that role so well and we haven't got anyone in to replace him. With that I'm glad we're not going for Modric, he's a top player but again doesn't score goals... Whoever Fergie decides to get in I hope he gets a goalscoring midifleder. Yeah, sorry for going off topic, but hey!

He's a class act! I'd have him at United anyday although I doubt he'd want to move.
