Spent quite a long time in Poland, so I guess I could contribute somewhat. Krakow is obviously the main tourist attraction due to its standing as the only city not bombed to bits during ww2, and as the 'royal' city has the most beautiful architecture. Wawel castle is pretty good as well, tbh i preferred it to Praha. Furthermore, you can make day trips to the salt mines/ Auschwitz-Birkenau, which I would really recommend, as well as a trip to the southern mountains (whose name currently escape me, in amy case i wouldnt be able to spell it) In terms of Warszawa, I'd give it a miss if you're tight on money/time, its where I was living, and I have very fond memories of the place, but apart from the museums (uprising, military, chopin, science and national gallery) it doesn't have too much to offer unless you know people who'll show you around/just be hospitable. Poznan is a small, very centralised university town, so as you can imagine it gets pretty wild. Plus, like krakow, its clubbing area is in the old town, which is pretty cool, and it was probably my favourite town to visit. The tri-city of Gdansk(main area), Gdnia (tourist/hostel area) and sopoc (clubbing plus baltic sea, fun times on that beach..) is also a good place to visit. If you're into nature and whatnot, Zakopane and the tatra mountains etc. Are well known locations for that. In terms of Germany, Dresden and Nürnberg are two cities well worth visiting in the east that are sonetimes overlooked, but I think the best fun ti be had is in the array of villages around the state of bayern, although the language barrier may be difficult (although with their accents, you're probably just as well off as someone that could speak high german ) Romania gets a bad rep but is supposed to ve beautiful as well. In terms of prices, buses are obviously by far and away the cheapest option, and polskibus is amazing for travel to/from and around poland. Hostel rooms are generally £8 per night, beers 1, 5-2, and kebabs arouns 2, 50. Hope that helps anyway
Don't miss the south coast of Crete. I can't tell you what the right place is at the moment, but you want to be somewhere in the Greek islands in a place which has beautiful beaches and a nice restaurant and bar or two but isn't too touristy. Paleochora was a perfect choice twenty years ago, but it's probably too touristy now. My favorite mode of transportation in Europe was the Greek ferries. If you don't mind roughing it a bit, get the cheap ticket and bring a sleeping bag and an air mattress. Drink half the night, fall asleep under the stars but protected by an awning from any rain. The higher price tickets are no good, because they get you an uncomfortable airplane type seat to fail to fall asleep in. Don't travel with anything too valuable, though. I guess that's good general advice, but particularly on Greek ferries. To be fair, Greece is the one foreign country I've ever traveled in besides Canada where no one tried to rip me off. I'll agree with two others in saying you can't miss Dubrovnik. It's the most beautiful city I've ever seen, and has the most incredible old city in Europe, I believe--not to mention a beautiful beach and very nice restaurants. Any city you go in Croatia enjoy all the cheap, really good Viennese pastries, and try their pizza, Burek. I found their food in general really tasty and very cheap. I speak German so my advice about Germany may be useless. I really like Munich but Bavarians aren't for everyone. Koln was the most pleasant surprise, for me. Nothing spectacular, just a very nice place to wander around in, with a very cheap Pension I found in the center of town. I really liked Sweden because of the friendly, beautiful women, and secondarily for the food. I was in Malmo, which was pleasant but nothing special.
Getting pissed up with your mates and chanting football songs on the steps of the Catherdral in Cologne doesn't count as Angelic singing mate
Everybody thinks that when they're pissed Look at Karaoke, classic example of booze giving people an inflated sense of skill
I've sang in Trafalgar Sq standing in a Fountain to an audience of thousands, not sure whether it was appreciated or not though In all seriousness though, Albert Hall is a beautiful venue. One of the best acoustic designs ever, the sound in there is like nowhere else. Stunning building.
My wife travels alot for work so I often go and stay with her around Europe (that way I only have to pay for flights and works out a nice cheap holiday) Denmark - Copenhagen is a pretty cool town. A bit on the pricey side. If you have money go to NOMA - best restaurant I've ever eaten at. Sweden - Go to Stockholm. It's a great City (one of my favourites). Good food, great coffee and beautiful ladies. If your into coffee go to 'Drop' Coffee. (Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 10, 118 50 Stockholm, Sweden) Norway. Amazing Country. Oslo is somewhat overated. Countryside is fantastic though. (be sure to visit Tromsø) Germany - Berlin and Cologne are both great for nightlife. Croatia - Dubrovnik. Beautiful City in fact the whole coast along into Montenegro is worth visiting. Greece - Athens is a huge noisey, crazy city. There's some cool stuff there though but I would recommend island hoping rather than spending time in central Greece. Never been to Poland or Austria but Prague, Budapest and Vilnius are all worth visiting.
Rude. All these travel options and nobody has mentioned Butlins Minehead! The world's mad... Surprised France hasn't been mentioned. Granted it's full of the french but it's a brilliant country, especially the further south you go. I also had a surprisingly nice few days in Stavanger in Norway (echo the expense though), loved Prague and Berlin too and would recommend them to anyone. Been all over Italy and from football in Naples to romancing the missus in Florence. Was careful not to mix those two up - could go horribly wrong. Do adore Italy, it's a brilliant place, especially for those with vegetarian partners... Number one on my next hit list is Croatia. I was all set to go there a couple of years ago and did extensive research only for an offer for Thailand to flash up for less money so I bagged it (flights for £250 return!) instead.
I think I'm friends with the only non Scouse loving Norweigan! He supports Aberdeen and Southampton. Now there's a combo for you...
