I can't understand your logic in saying you wouldn't take Welbeck because he's a donkey but you'd take Carroll! He's one of the biggest donkeys going. I strongly disagree that Welbeck is a donkey. If he was playing for Leicester or City he'd be seen as a massive deal, but being at Man U and compared to Rooney and van Persie doesn't help his case. Look at his goal against Swansea on the opening day of this season. Could Carroll ever do that? No all he can do is knock balls down in the area for Nolan to smash in. Are we bringing Nolan too? And Tomkins to smash it forward from the centre circle?

What sort of argument is that? No, but then again Rooney, Lambert and Sturridge do that just about every week (not once a season). Could Welbeck score the same sort of goal that Carroll did versus Sweden? Not a chance.
Yes. He's scored some really good headed goals too. Including for England this season if I recall correctly. Carroll hasn't been that effective for two years now. Since then all he's really done is be injured and knock the odd ball down for his team-mates to scrap for. England's team won't be set up for that. Our strengths are quick, nimble attackers/wingers and midfielders who can play. They won't be as effective as the likes of Nolan, Demel, Diame etc in the box when playing off Carroll.

True Welbeck has scored the odd header. But he's not nearly as good in the air as Carroll is. Not a chance that Welbeck could score with such aplomb from a deep cross like Carroll did. Carroll is effective every game (he might not score but that's not his game). Every long ball that hits him in the opposition half makes something happen. Yes, but we're talking about backup options. What good is it bringing on more nimble forwards when the current (and better) nimble forwards are not doing anything? It's also bullshit that Rooney, Sturridge etc would be worse at latching on to his knockdowns than the West Ham lot. It's laughable in fact.
I just think it's a very niche game they play. Most of their team is set up to play that specific way. Obviously England have more quality than West Ham but the likes of Gerrard are going to be looking for Sturridge's runs or Rooney's ghosting into space, not just lumping it up the middle. More importantly perhaps, the back four like to try and play out where possible and use the width of the pitch. Carroll wouldn't get the service he thrives on. At the same time, the players I mentioned at West Ham who obviously aren't as good as Rooney and Sturridge, their specific strength is scrapping in the area for loose balls. That strength is perhaps shared by Cahill but who else in the England squad? I don't think there's many who specialise in scoring tap-ins like the West Ham lot do. There isn't really an English Javier Hernandez is there? I can see your point about him offering something different to help mix it up a bit, but Lambert would offer that and he's more of a footballer and a finisher as well.
I have to say, I agree with AKCJ, I'd rather Carroll over Welbeck. But Welbeck over Lambert, not sure yet.
Highest scoring Englishman this season. To say he is not good enough compared to the other English strikers is just stupid.
I'd take Carroll over Welbeck, it's about options and having a mixture of strengths. I made the same point as AKCJ awhile ago where if Sturridge and Rooney aren't getting through or behind the enemy defence, why would a similar but worse Welbeck succeed where they failed? Carroll isn't the best striker but he's a specialist - an absolute beast in the air. With all the climate and what not I expect our lot will be dogged and tired towards the end of every game so giving them the option of less work and just smashing the ball to a man mountain will be perfect.
I'd have taken Nolan over Carrick for England. If Thudd plays at Wembley, I wonder if Roy would be watching on? Isn't the England manager usually a guest of honour?
