I've never wished for a season to end before like this one. There was the initial idea with AVB's era that style would be sacrificed for substance. NOPE. With the influx of exciting talent from abroad, maybe these were the guys AVB wanted who'll fit into this supposed entertaining style of play similar to what he had at Porto. NOPE. Then there comes the usual guaranteed 3 pointer against West Ham at the Lane. NOPE. Then comes drubbing after drubbing from most of the teams above us. YEP. Then AVB says bye, bye and Tim comes in saying he "knows what the fans want", was he right? NOPE. And so now we're currently left with a fight for 6th place, no Europa, no COC Cup, no FA Cup and on top of that, we've been treated to the most dismal style of football we've seen in donkeys years Yay for Tottenham!
"And so now we're currently left with a fight for 6th place, no Europa, no COC Cup, no FA Cup and on top of that, we've been treated to the most dismal style of football we've seen in donkeys years" And yet we could stil finish with a PL total of 70 odd points.
"Be lucky to get over the 60 mark on current form" We're going for the highest possible pts total with the worst GD. We have our 2006-7 60 pts with +3 GD in sight. 70 pts with zero GD is a decent target.
That's the spirit CJ but I think your last sentence is tongue in cheek, yes? I just know I won't see another 1966 in my lifetime. Thank God I was there for the first one! Had a good old knees up in Trafalgar Square that night. What a laugh!
Anyone else remember the season we lost the league cup final to Blackburn? think it was 2001/02 or 2002/03 season...we kept losing 4 nil ... chelsea (twice), boro, blackburn, united...that was way worse than this...Hoddle was our manager and it was becoming clear that he didn't have a clue as a manager...horrible or the season we sacked hoddle and had pleat? that saw us go out of the FA cup 4-3 to city in THAT poxy match...it saw us fighting relegation, the gooners winning the prem at whl and saw us scrapping a 4 all draw against soon to be relegated Leicester who were down to 10 men ... while we were 3 - 1 up... that was way worse. thats 2 in the past 12 years... don't get me started on the 1990's!
On Monday I started watching the West Ham game. Andy Carroll scored within seconds. Ah! Baseball opening day. My Cubs were playing the Pirates. Eighth inning, nil nil--which never happens. The Cubs get the winning run to third with one out. Anything but a strikeout or a popup scores the winning run... ...except a sharp comebacker to the pitcher. The player who hit it walks off with his head in his hands. I don't need to keep watching to know the Cubs will lose, and complete their 106th consecutive season without a title. What is it about investing a part of your day-to-day happiness in the fortunes of a sports team that strictly speaking has nothing to do with you? You're not a member, you get nothing when they win, and lose nothing when they lose. It all descends, I suppose, from watching your city's army from the city walls, and knowing you'll be sold into slavery if they lose. But today nothing rides on any of this (except for gamblers). And why invest your happiness in anything, really? Why did I care when the first girl I asked out turned me down? Maybe I invest happiness in sports teams and used to invest them in dating fortunes because I know I'll lose everything I have eventually, so any wins in anything along the way are upticks I wouldn't have otherwise, while anything I lose I will lose anyway. Our ancestors made a silly bet on fortune when they had children, and somehow we keep surviving as a group through all the disappointment and disaster, through all the ends which seem so final. So maybe it is the wins that are real, and the willingness to stake something on anything in this world is a kind of courage.
I can remember our Spurs winning games 10-4,13-2, so now it's all turned around now.We can hardly score goals now.Our defence is wondering what it's on the field to do and our goal difference is an absolute farce! We've been beaten up on a regular routine by the teams above us and most of our wins have been by the odd goal over lower teams who should have got something out of the games. Liverpool are going the opposite way. They have two regular goal scorers who have helped paper over their shortcomings giving their defence confidence that if they screw up,their forwards will score more to make up for them ! We are badly in need of a REGULAR goal scorer....which makes me wonder how we managed to sign Klinsman seasons ago? Why can't we find another.........?and why haven't the club fined Vertonghen for not bothering?
"which makes me wonder how we managed to sign Klinsman seasons ago?" His wages were acceptable to him, and his contract T+Cs allowed him to ditch if things were no longer to his liking (which he duly did - and wound up Sugar immensely) . I do wonder whether Spurs could find another Berbatoss though. Or perhaps there are just too many suitors out there / scouts clued up on the Euro talent nowadays.
Our strikers have been fine. Adebayor, Defoe, Soldado and the like all know where the goal is. The service and team balance have been severely lacking, though. We haven't replaced Modric, which appears to be my new mantra, and we're continually shifting our XI and system dramatically. No stability, no continuity and no overall plan.
Couldn't agree more. Never have I seen us be the wrong side of so many 4, 5 nil drubbings. So many players need to be offloaded this summer.
so many players need NOT be offloaded this summer,or next season will be the same as this,we just need 2or 3 key signings and a Manager
Is Levy going to buy these 3 key signings . We have a buy to sell policy , so no chance of any proven game changers such as a VDV, Mod/Berb/Bale. Another bunch of non-effective mediocrity as Dembele, Siggy,Capoule, etc. I do admire your optimism .
The problem I have is I never believe him , I think the Hollywood native Indians have a saying " Speaks with forked tongue "
He hasn't net spent anything in 5 years our net spend is next to nothing. We have a buy to sell policy and sadly we are the worlds NO1 selling club. An achievement of sorts if bookkeeping and paying yourself a colossal salary is your priority . DOF is his responsibility the buck stops with him, he signs the cheques no one else. Teflon Dans words "We don't sell our best players" as I said he "Speaks with forked tongue"
